Sellers-- son left saw idling in tree--when to house to get drink---returned saw had stoped---motor will not turn--saw owen by home owner nice looking saw--sold saw for 20 dollars--saw has not been taken a part and checked

Sellers opinion is motor got hot and welded togeather. chainsaws are air cooled maked to run for flow of air not idle.

I need all the opinion and advice from members-- the pros and
cons---why the saw locked up and what it will take to repair it
To start did motor lowed up with gas--if so what damage was done this is just one possible----you guys know the answer.

Thanks JR:confused:

True but you guys know from problems in past history the different condictions the saw may be in and what was done to repair it.

I know it is only a guess. That it will take more than one guess or different guesses ------I do not need to take it a shop----The answer is here on this forum

I have a lot of faith in you Guys

Thank JR

The neighbor could of had a siezed up 028 & seen the kid run in the house to get a drink & ran over & switched saws quick before the kid came back out. I see it dunn that way all the time around here...Rick/Saw Slut

Don't think that a saw will seize at idle. I've idled several saws for extended periods with no problems. Check the recoil mechanism to see that something didn't come loose. My 031 would do this every now and then-- I'd loosen the recoil housing and everything freed up. The starter pawls were loose on the flywheel. Tighten them up just so and a little oil and it's worked perfect since.

Short version: start eliminating sources of binding--recoil, something in coil gap, clutch locked to chain somehow, oiler, etc. Don't force the crank. Have an 056 that broke a wrist pin retaining clip and lodged it between piston and wall. Hopefully that didn't happen to your saw.

P.S. Find me a saw like that!!

Thanks .Both answers were good If saw had been cut off no problem. It was not - motor stuck or pull rope stuck--here we go to the law of elimination this way you find what the trouble is or what it is not.

I am not trying to get any member to look as if they gave a incorrect opinion are way out on answer.I want all that will to give opinion or guess what to do etc.

What if I take out plug and spray with WD40?---I have in the past But motor was rebuilt

Seller could told part truth but not the whole truth?

when pulling started rope motor will not move or turn is the whole truth

My fist thought is to check the fuel tank.If it locked up idling there shoud be some fuel in it.Is it mixed fuel or straight gas?

Rick

thanks Rick---went an check after reading your post. No fuel in tank-----plain gas will sure lock motor. ( good reason)

JR

well the good news i hope. is that if it locked at low rpm ,,i would imagine less damage. if u dont know how to break it loose the mechanics here can tell u.
never locked one up at idle ,so i may be wrong but seems so.

Thanks Tony your opinion --it gives me hope low RPM==less damage

I am with you on the idleing of saw. Never had motor stick when left idleing

JR:confused:

Normally a saw does not sieze at an idle. The low speed idle adjustment set on the lean side will in most cases stall the saw long before it could come close to siezing up.

My bet is that straight gas was placed in the saw and run until fried.

Never worked on a chain saw---have lawn mowers--4cycle

Have removed plug and muffer. Piston not frozen up---Push piston down ????Pull rope will move until piston reaches top dead center then all stopes

Working on lawn mower motor this would be a broken rod. that is what I am guessing.

Give me your opinon---(piston looks good) and advice

Thanks JR

You can see the rod through the intake port. Before you pull the jug, take off the recoil. Expanding on what I said before, when the recoil pawls got loose on my 031, I could advance the piston to a point and then it stopped. Back it off and same thing. Loosening the recoil took care of that. Problem was loose mechanism. Not saying this is your problem. You may have a very different recoil.

You seem reluctant to do any wrenching. Don't worry, we'll help you get it back together.

something cought in or under flywheel or rewind. broken clutch spring or shoe. something on top of piston.

check this first
