I have a stihl 031AV chainsaw that needs points and condenser that are no longer available. I have read some postings where the "OREGON LOGGER" has an update chip to eliminate the points and condenser, but I can not find any information on how to get ahold of him. Does anyone out there know how to get ahold of him, or know somewhere where I can get this updated chip to eliminate the points/condenser? I need to get my saw up and going again.
Thanks,

My local small engine shop has/had the NovaII electronic chip. I think they were $12. Put one on one of my Homelite 1050's. Saw runs well. It may be I'm just getting old and weak, but it seemed to make the engine a little harder to pull, like it changed the ignition advance a little. It also seems to kick back and rip the handle out of your hand, taking a couple fingers with it. The 1050 is a 100CC saw with no compression release, so you need a good grip on the cord when starting. Yep, just checked ebay, they have them between $12 and $25, Joe.

Sorry, this past weekend I was cleaning up my photobucket account and seems I deleted the pics I had of the install, but it wasn't hard. Just ran the wires along the plug wire and mounted the chip to the case where it was covered, Joe.

Joe,
Thanks so much for the reply. This sounds like what I am looking for, but hate to just order it and take a chance that it will work. Can you give me the name and phone # of the shop that you bought yours at so I can quiz them as to whether this will work on mine.

Sam, check your in box at the top right of the page, I sent you a private message. I started to post the name and number of my shop and some other info. Posting non sponsor numbers might be a violation of site rules. Better safe than sorry, Joe.

Thanks,
I checked out the pantanopowerequipment ebay store for the Nova II chip, referenced by Mike Van, for my 031AV saw, and came across one at Randys Engine Repair, instead, and he says the chip IS NOT compatible with the Stihl 031 or 031AV saws! Have you had any luck in this department, yet!

fwiw
my brother has an old 041av that had very weak spark, the points were pretty fried and the condenser bad... i could not find the points and while waiting on ebay to ship me a new condenser i opted to install a condenser from an old GM parts bin i have in stock.

all i did was spice into the kill wire for the condenser wire, and remote mounted it. then filed the points and polished them with 600gr wet/dry paper. got nice hot spark restored and back to work again.

it has been running like a warrior every since, however i did change out the old condenser for the new one when it came in.

the point being, i have no issues with filing points and/or installing another condenser when parts are hard to find.

again fwiw, it might be something that allows you to get the saw back off the bench and in the woods again?

Sorry, I have not been on this site for awhile and did not realize that I had a post. Due to just having carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists, I have not been successful in getting my saw apart to try the Nova II chip. I did start the disassembly, but seems like the points are impossible to get to. I hope to be able to get back to this next week and will post my results.
