Hello! New guy here... Long time reader, I learn something new every time! Here goes.. I have what I think is a Stihl 036 (48mm piston) there is no badge on the engine cover. Saw has the chain adjuster on the side. There is no muffler. Saw is the 1125 series. My other saw is a Stihl 1125 series with a 48mm piston also, but here's where I need help... Is the 2nd saw possibly an 034 super? The piston is slightly different on the sides compared to the 1st saw The chain adjuster is similar to the 1st saw, but has only 1 screw holding it on instead of 2. BTW, I have a 3rd saw that is an 034 that has the 46mm piston and has the chain adjuster in the front by the bucking spike.
When I get this all figured out I have 2 Stihl 024's to sort out (1 might be an 024 super.. what's the difference between the 2?).
I got all these saws in various stages of disrepair and I am trying to put them back together.
Any info. on all this what be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Stihl 034 Super VS Stihl 036

My initial post was rather long.... Here's the short of it. Can the Stihl 034 (48mm) Piston be used in the Stihl 036 jug? I have 2 saws, one I believe to be a Stihl 036 non pro. The other looks the same except the piston (I have no jug) looks slightly different on the sides, and the con rod looks a little lighter (maybe an older model).
Can someone point out the differences here, Iam rather stumped.
I can post pics if need be. Thanks, Aim High

The 034S 48mm piston and the 036 48mm piston are the same. There have been a few differences over the 18 years of production, but they interchange.

034 and 034S muffler fit (some) to an 036 cylinder is another story, but there are work-arounds for that.

Thanks for the reply Lakeside53! You really know your stuff! I have to ask a little more. Does the Stihl 034/super have the chain adjuster on the side accessable thru the chain cover? Iam trying to determine which hood to put on the one saw that I only have the case and piston for (whether it's an 034 super or an 036) Iam missing some important parts to help me determine what model it actually is....I even called the Stihl 800 # and he couldn't help me trace the serial #.
Iam having the same problem with 2 of my Stihl 024's. I bought a parts lot and in it were hoods from an 024 and an 024 super, same as with the 034 and 034 super, so am trying to assemble all correctly.
I have the older Stihl CD for parts breakdown on the computer, but doesn't show me which model is which.....
Thanks Again! Aim High

I dont think I would worry a lot about making sure the same parts go with those saws except the piston/ring/cylinder assemblies were all correct. The only difference I could see is engine shroud differences, and possibly needing a muffler spacer on the 034 Super. However, if they are 034supers or 036's they should be the same. Lakeside will correct me if Im wrong.

Thanks for the reply Bowtie! I have several saws to put back together, so it's back to work! :chainsaw:
I'll be back...lol Aim High

Hey, Thanks RiverRat2!
Air Force?.... No, just a soldier in God's army! :)

The super had a side adjuster.

The shrouds differed slightly over time, but you can fix that by removing any obstruction on the cylinder with a dremel (on the inside of the cover).

You'll typically need a spacer if going to the later muffer types - specifically 036 on an 034. 034 muffers vented on the front cover; 036 on the rear section.

Thanks Lakeside53! You've been a great help!
Typically does the 036 muffler flow better than the 034 muffler? Also, by using a spacer, you mean a heat shield?

The 036 muffler does flow better.

The spacer is separate from any heatshield (found on the MS360). If you end up with a 3mm or so gap at the cylinder, you'll need the spacer (about $4.)

Hello Lakeside53! Does the Stihl 036 non pro have the adjustable oil pump? Also, do all of the 034's have the adjustable oil pump?
Thanks, Aim High

All the 036 have an adjustable pump.

There are three different pumps for the 034; 2 not adjustable, 1 adjustable. Old crankscases without adjustable pumps cannot fit the newer pumps without grinding an ugly hole...

The 034S all had adjustable pumps.

Now that raises a question for me. My recently-purchased 034 says "034AV Electronic Quickstop" on the plate, but it does have the side adjuster. Soooo, is mine actually an 034S???? (s/n 114580617)

One of my 034's has a side adjust, the other doesn't. Neither is a Super. (was?)

Later 034 also had side adjusters.

Thanks, Lake. After I asked that question, I went on e-bay and looked at some pictures of 034's for sale and saw many with side adjusters. Thanks for clearing that up. And I did note that the 034S models were clearly marked "Super" on the plate.

Sorry, I am bring back this old thread. See if I get this correctly.

For the case:
Older 034 has the mounting for front chain adjuster and/or NO hole at the bottom for the oil adjustment meaning if I see either, then it is an 034 (older one).
Newer 034, 034 super, 036 and 036 pro all have side chain adjuster and oil adjust hole.

Per Lakeside53, "All the 036 have an adjustable pump.
There are three different pumps for the 034; 2 not adjustable, 1 adjustable. Old crankscases without adjustable pumps cannot fit the newer pumps without grinding an ugly hole...

Rod and crankshaft are all the same for any 034, 034super, 036, and 036 pro meaning they all have the same stroke.

For the cylinder and piston, if you see a compression valve or a screw where the valve is, then it is a 036 or 036 pro (some 036s use 036 pro cylinder when Stihl was running out of 036 cylinder?). If you see no valve or hole for valve, then you CAN'T TELL whether it is a 034 (46mm) or 036/034 super/036pro (48mm), am I right? Does it mean I have to open the cylinder to measure?
Or there is a way to tell without opening? Wait, 036 cylinder is different than the 034/034 Super in how the muffler fits and you need a spacer? That means 036 cylinder is different than 034super, right?

All carbs are the same or at least interexchangeable except the -36pro carb has self-compensating top plate which is easily removable? The plate will need its air filter which in turn will need the right "pro" carb cover?

Per Lakeside53, "The shrouds differed slightly over time, but you can fix that by removing any obstruction on the cylinder with a dremel (on the inside of the cover)."

I'm gonna chime in and add a question to all this. I have an 034 super, and was unable to get a new air filter for it at my local dealer. I have seen an 038 filter that looks about the same, will that fit up?

They are different. Even if the two nuts will fit, I don't think you could put the carb cover on.
I now learned that the tank vent is in the way if I want to put a 036 Pro air filter on a 036 / 034 tank handle. Oh man, they are a few variations of tank vents too.
