hey guys i am looking at a couple used saws. When did stihl start making the 361MS and what time period did the produce the 036Pro? thanks guys you have been a big help in the past. One other note have you guys ever heard of a 036 melting down the cylinder head and piston?

Sorry, I thought someone would have piped up by now:monkey:
I have no idea as for youre questions, but I am curious as to why you asked about the locked cyl. and piston!

As I remember it, the MS361 came out late 2003, and replaced the MS 360. It is a totally new, and much better design, not just an improvement/evolution.

I also believe that the 036 was renamed the MS360 about in 2001, without much changes in the design.

Too many RPMs, not enough lubrication. I'd bet in skilled (malicious?) hands you could do it to any saw in about two minutes.

Anyone on the site want to give it a try? We could have a race?

036

Thanks guys...not really sure what happened the saw ran great and just quit one day. Not a lube issue i run several other saws and numerous other handheld equipment without any issue. ?????not sure really but i guess its time to fix it

I purchased my 036 Pro new in 2001. The dealer ordered it from Stihl, so they were still either making them or selling their back stock at that time, which was, I think, around mid summer.

Last week, a retired Stihl dealer [just retired a few months ago] claimed to me that the 036 is basically the same saw as the 361 as far as size and so forth. On the other hand, I don't personally know and others here say it isn't the same. I don't know what the MS suffix is or whether there are other "361" models as I haven't kept up since my saw does me so well I haven't bothered. Someone here will pipe up and tell us the differences, for sure, and maybe I'll catch up my knowledge.

All the model numbers were changed, along the lines of: 026 became MS260, 036 became MS360, 044 became MS440, etc...

The MS361 came along later, replacing the MS360. It is a new design, but draws on the heritage of the popular MS360.

361 is setup like the new 441. It has better antivibe and much better air filtration setup. Without getting beat, it is more like a Husqvarna filter setup, where it uses a duct off of the flywheel to take air into the filter that has been "precleaned" by centrifugal force. The spinning flywheel gathers up air, and centrifugal force takes the bigger dirt particals to the ouside of the flywheel and the air inlet to the filter is picked up closer to the inside of the flywheel. This greatly improves air filter cleaning intervals.

On a side note, My old 066 was a mid to late 2003 model. Anyone have an idea when the MS 3 digit numbers came out for sure? Did it vary for the differant models?

Yes, it varies by model. I also have a late 2003 066 that is identical to the MS660 in every way except for the model ID tag.

He is right regarding "size and so forth" - but that is about all.

After all, the 361 is the replacementfor the 036/360, but as said already - a completely new design.

Yes, as I remember the 088 did not become the MS880 before in 2005 here, and one version of the 066 (Logosol) was sold alongside the MS660 in 2004.
