Yesterday I disassembled the 036 down to the oil pump so I could clean it out, tune it up and get it ready for winter. In doing so, when I reassembled it my chain wouldn't stop spinning when the saw was idle. I re-adjusted the carb according to the specs and lowered my idle speed down to as low as it can go without stalling the saw (when chain brake is on). Still the chain keeps spinning.

Did I re-assemble something incorrectly? Any help would be appreciated.

is your brake and brake band on correctly and working... check idle... if that doesnt solve it maybe air leak somewhere, vacuum test.

Thanks for the help.

The brake works so I believe the band is on correctly. The chain doesn't spin with the brake is on. Only when the brake is not engaged and the saw is at idle.

Other than wiping off the clutch I didn't do anything to it. Could I have torqued it on the shaft too much/not enough?

Sounds like you messed up the clutch to me. It's not releasing at idle.

yeah thats what I meant when I said brake, even though I know better I still always say brake in referring to clutch. did you get any oil on the clutch or drum

Thanks guys I figured it out. The clutch was stuck open because I installed the washer that sits between the clutch and the oil pump backwards. I flipped it around and it runs perfect.

Turn the "L" screw on the carb just a little counter clockwise

I love this place! Everything you need to know. Same situation for me. New used 361, clutch was grenaded. Replaced the whole assembly. Chain wouldn't stop running. Flip over the bottom plate and bob's your uncle.
