Stihl 038 ignition point delete

I’m not having any trouble yet. But I’m going to swap out my points to an ignition module.Does anyone have any recommendations on what one is best suited for this saw? I found Oregon has one,are they any good? Two wire (remote ground? Or single and ground it directly to the coil?

Just get a 038 electronic coil or any of the compatible Stihl universal coils 0000 400 1300.

OEM is best, used can be had cheap/free.

So I’m a bit confused. So according to this I can just replace the old coil with a newer upgrade coil that has it all in one and it will replace the points and condenser?

Leave well alone! You’ll devalue the saw and open yourself up to issues.

Yes plug and play.

Yes, just clip the wire going under the flywheel and install the new coil. All you have to do is hook up the kill wire. No need to pull the flywheel

Tom, unless it was a pristine original restoration it makes no sense in this case.

You don't even have to pull the flywheel. Think about expense of buying/finding a NOS set of points/condenser. That will set you back more than a functional used coil.

Just late last year I attempted to put a chip into an old 028 WB. The saw ran poorly from the get go and eventually lost spark. Per advice from great folks on AS, I installed an OEM ignition module/coil. Problem solved.
