Well guys, I got another rebuilt, clean Stihl 044. This is also the 12mm wrist pin style saw. Lots of new parts. Starts right up and runs good so far. Compression is showing a healthy 160+ and compression release works good. The cylinder, crank, case, and piston are all good used parts. The rings are new Caber and the tank is a NOS screw-cap style OEM part. I can do a part trade on a Husky 555 carcass or a 3120 crankcase. Let me know what you think. This one has dings and scratches in the top cover and air filter cover. Air filter is a new OEM HD2 with both pre filters.

May disclaim it has a 440 jug on the 044 ,having the decomp
Actually, the 044 was available with a decomp for quite a while...

In fact, for a time you could get the 044 without the decomp and the half-wrap handle and small sprocket cover, or you could get the 044 with the decomp and the 3/4 wrap handle and large sprocket cover, which is exactly how this one is set-up.

Yeah, the 044 and 440 had different target markets than the 046/460. We sold the half-wrap non-decomp 440 primarily to thinning and professional forestry crews. The decomp 3/4 wrap saws primarily went to loggers and tree services. The 046 and 460 were always designed for exclusively professional operators. In fact, the 046 was field tested with fallers here in the PNW for more than a year before it was released. Madsen's had a photo in the shop for a long time of two falling contractors out of Lake Stevens with the prototype 046s.

My neighbor up the road is a part time logger, or was a logger. He stopped by one day and had a ms880 and 3120, and then he showed me his 390xp and said it was his limbing saw.

I will try to catch him around some time and ask him if he has a 3120 carcass
