I am not a professional saw user by any means, but love to run them. I have had 5 new stihls in 6 years, and just sold my 036 (which wasn't even out of warranty yet) to get an ms460. I have a disease that makes me keep wanting new toys, I am sure you all know what I mean. I use my saws around the house, and cut a lot of firewood, burn 6 - 8 cords a year. The 460 is probably too much saw. Does anyone know of any inherent problems with this model? I will saw that I miss my 12.5 lb 036, but the 460 has power to burn. Is this a good saw? Thanks in advance.

Toolmaker,

I have a 046M (mine 2001), which is the same MS460. I checked out the exact saw you bought today, one thing I noticed right away the new fuel and oil caps, man those are nice. No more, screw off caps using the wrench, just pop-tops. You bought I think the best all a rounder that Stihl makes. I normally run an 18" bar on mine but have run a 36" too on occasion. I have not had any problems with my saw but she only has about 8 tanks of gas through her so I would not be the one to ask. However, you have a great saw and bought from the best.

good luck and have fun

I have a couple of 046's. They're great saws. Just a tad heavier than 044's, but better saws and they come pretty close to 066 power output. I'd call the 046 a "sweet spot" in the Stihl lineup.
According to Madsens, the 046 is their best selling Pro saw.

I actually like to pair them up with 026's for the smaller tasks. With an 046 and 026 you'll have a great duo that can do 99% of what you need. You could also pair up the 046 with a Dolmar (Makita) DCS 401 and that pair would also be an excellent marriage.

Just don't pair up a Stihl with a Husky. (They won't get along!!!)

toolmaker,I also have a 2001 model 046 thats been powertuned by the MAN in canada. It works very well it will cut with a stock 066 (maybe a bit better). So if you want a real saw send it up to Walkers and let them work their majic on it ,You will be inpressed!!!!Well worth the $

woodsJunkie,

Did you cut with your 046 before you sent it JW? I think my saw cuts like the tasmanian devil himself, does it cut that much better? Im dieing to know because your the only one so far that i know that has the exact same saw i have but went one step further.

I have last years 046Mag and love it for big wood situations I own a tree service and purchased it after receiving a job to remove a 5'9" across the stump dead red oak i think i ran 2 gallons of fuel thru it the first day out and it atye up that oak but for everyday use on smaller wood i'll stick to my lighter 036pro love that one to.

As a matter of fact before i bought the 046 my biggest saw was a MS290 after buying the 046 i had to buy the 036 because i couldnt handle that Lazy farmboss not enough power!

Well i was so overwhelmed by that Red oak i was Dead set on an 066 but dealers around here dont carry anything that large and my dealer assured me the 046 would do the job and he was right.

Confused... The reason I chose the MS460 is because it was the next logical choice in the Stihl lineup. I had an 029, 029 Super and an 036 pro. I needed to satisfy my sickness to get new toys, and the 460 was next. I really think I will not get a bigger saw, for what I use it for, it has power to spare. I also do not want to go to a heavier powerhead. This saw is a full 2 pounds heavier than my 036, and the difference is definitely noticeable. I miss the 036, and will probably own another some day. I feel the 036 is an outstanding machine for its weight class.

DDM,

I did the same thing. My local dealer didnt carry the 066 or i wouldve bought that. But my dealer told me that the 046 will be all the saw i will ever need. Toolmaker, have you ever used an 026? I think that will be my next saw purchase to give me a small saw for the little stuff. Or I'll just use 046 with my 18"bar because it will cut anything. Who knows, but its good to know there are others out there that use the best saw on hte planet.
