I have a stihl 056 Mag 2 that has no spark. It has the SEM ignition. I read in a past post that this ignition is still avaible from stihl. Does anyone know this is still correct? I have inspected and repaired the insulation on the ground wire. I've disconnected the kill switch. I've replaced the plug wire with one from one of my parts saws. Also, does anyone know why I've seen so many 056's with bad ignitions lately on Ebay.

Thanks

Last I checked (1 year ago) you can get that ignition from Stihl, but the price will kill you. Around $130 bucks. The 08s, TS-350 and maybe 360 chopsaws use the very same module on some versions so you could get lucky that way.

Don't know why there might be a bunch of bad ignitions on Ebay. As far as 056s go: 1) they are getting old, and 2) you could get up to 3 three different types of electronic modules (all with unique flywheels) on a 056 and also fit a set of points from the 045. I wonder sometimes if people just have the wrong flywheel matched with the module. The Stihl manual has the Bosch part numbers that go with the points flywheel and the early electronic one as well. Those numbers don't really jive with what I found I my saws, so who knows?

Right now I'm wrestling with an 045 I got from an Arboristsite member. Has very weak spark, so I might try to fit the points and coil from a TS-350 chopsaw and make that work. Coil has a little damage from the flywheel rubbing it when the bearings gave out, but I'm giving it a whack.

Good luck to you, Chris B.

056

Ignition is a weak point on this model. Seem to have a lot less failures since modules were moved from under the flywheel. Them electronics don't like heat all that well.
I believe it is still available. Also used on the later TS350 cutoff saw.

Talked to my stihl dealer today. Sure enough the new ignition is $134.50 plus tax. That hurts. Thanks for the info.
