I found a good used 056 for 80$ is this a good saw to start modding on?
this thing has a ton of compresson. it may need a carb kit but that's it as far as I could tell. what bar/chain should I get if I buy it?

One of the best saws Stihl ever made. It won't need to be modded once you get it started and see what it can do to wood.

What he said! Before someone jumps in, I'll say it. ;) It's heavy and a fat arse! But they go like stink!

Everyone else beat me to it...But I was gonna say that the saw is worth 50 bucks just to keep as a collector

Thanks for the replies I am looking at a cheap used saw to experiment on and this jonsered dealer has 80 saws and half of them just need some tlc. I looked at a partner 5000. He has a 2171 that needs a crank and topend. But he has many old stihls and that 056 caught my eye. It has the most compression of any saw I have ever pulled. I think it will be a screamer. Ill offer him 70$ cash and Im sure it will be mine. I just wanted to know what you guys thought. Ive never heard of an 056 before. what are the specs on this saw? She is very fat but I like the styling with the flat air filter cover. It gives it that retro look. I think Ill put a big bar on it just for fun and see what she will do this weekend after I get it running. It has spark so all I need to do is clean out the carb and maybe rebuild it and it should run. The saw is complete it just need a bar. If I cleaned it up and painted everything it would look like new. oh yeah its a magnum2 you say it will pull a 50" bar!

Buy all the Mag II's you can for $70 each. Send me one. It's not a high revving saw but it doesn't bog down either. 056's were very popular and there's alot of them around.

Tuck this site away for looking up saws in the future:

Now go buy that saw!!!

Buy it dude... or I'll send ya the cash and you can buy it for me. You won't be sorry... unless it is a basket case that you are willing to put the time and money into.

The 056 Mag2 was over 90 cc's. Big saw for big trees.

well I went back to buy it and I told him to check for spark. no spark he thought it was good but now it prob needs a coil. The saw is mint it should run good if I fix her up. Priced out new coil 200$cndn. I was told the coil runs inside the flywheel. I don't want to spend a killing fixing it so I need to find a good used coil if im going to get it. is ebay my best bet?

Every chance the ignition module is OK but the kill switch wire has shorted to deck. See my recent post for how to fix. If you do need replacement module, check out Baileys and cheapstihlparts. Going rate seems to be about $65US.

You need to determine if it's Bosch or SEM. SEM has a one piece flywheel; the Bosch is two (fan wheel on a steel core). If it's Boche, the ignition is likely toast... and in that case you need a new flywheel and SEM ignition to convert/fix it.

Thanks for the info I think I can get it very cheap now. The owner wasn't there so I couldn't barter. I have restored many things before and I may take this one on. It shouldn't be too much hassle to track down a module and or a flywheel. If im lucky it may just be a loose wire or something simple. I get along really good with the owner and he knows his saws. I told him I wanted to learn how to port and polish saws and play with port timing, shaving heads etc.. and He said Cool, they have never seen a ported muffler! I told him the first saw may get wrecked and he said the first few may get wrecked and we both laughed. The 056 will be kept stock and I will try to rebuild it as I find out where the cheap parts can be found. Im going to see if I can buy another saw that has spark for cheap use that for modding and get him to throw the 056 in the deal.
