Stihl 064 correct compression?

How many pulls does it take to start your 064? When mine get upwards of 6 is when I generally do a compression, fuel line test and determine when and if it needs to be rebuilt. That's just me though. I have been known to cut with a saw pulling 135 lbs of compression if it starts good and runs good. I cut firewood for myself and others, so while I like to maximize my time, it's not like I'm doing it for a living. 150 is a good number to go by but not the cutoff point for a rebuild in my eyes. But I won't sacrifice time for money!

Okay, the full story... The saw has been sitting for 5 years with a bad coil. It's the coil that apparently can't be purchased any more. That according to a local saw shop. I brought it home and shelved it. I just got around to looking at it last week. I found a break in the coil wire at the coil, and repaired it. The saw now gets fire, but won't crank. It did "pop" one time. I'm sure the carburetor needs work, but the saw won't fire when I spray fluid in the cylinder. I checked compression and came up with 135. Not sure how to test the gauge... I've been a non mechanical tree guy for years. It's time to learn. Also, I have an illogical love for this saw. I really want it to live again.

All my Stihls generally take less than 6 to start. I know my saws so if they occasionally take more it is no big deal. I guess the thinner air in the Adirondacks make starting a Stihl more difficult lol! BTW Smokediver - welcome to the site! A lot of great information here.

I hear ya. I have an 064 on my bench that has the same problem. At first it was no spark and had bolt holes for the coil that wouldn't accept the standard coil. There are so many pairings of coils and flywheels on an 064 that it will make your head spin. My coil is a 1122 400 1300. Waiting for MM to send me a coil he's got. In the meantime borrowed one from a friend of mine. The saw spit but wouldn't start. Took apart the carb and rebuilt it. It started and ran great. Next day went to start it and it wouldn't start. So I leak tested the carb and it SLOWLY leaked down, enough to flood the saw I guess. Now waiting for a carb. The coil, if it is the same coil is not sold by Stihl anymore, but can be had by some Stihl dealers or on this site or eBay occasionally. Have got a line on a brand new coil from a dealer but it is $150. So I'm waiting to see if MM Is any good. Good saw when you get it running! Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome, and the info. I have already learned a LOT by reading the threads. I will update again when I have more info.

I had an 064 that AWOL put an 029 coil in.
It worked.. What he had to do to get it installed? No idea.
I have an 064 that I can’t get to idle. Has plenty of throttle power . Compression is 150. I have replaced the carburetor and all the hoses. If I turn the L adjustment screw out far enough I can get it to run but very very high idle. As I adjust the screw back in it gets to a point where it stalls. What am I missing? What could be the problem?
