hey all, was just stripping a friends 064 he just got from his father.. pulled the flywheel off and noticed something i have never seen before.. TWO keyway slots cut in it. is this orig or has somebody done some modding on this saw? keyway slot looks very well done, possibly a 5deg advance or so..
if it was modded.. would have been done back when the 064 was a new model.

Ben- I don't have a clue. But my first thought was to check Thompson's place for the IPL. Maybe the exploded view in there will shed some light. I'd have done it, but out here in the sticks, my dial up is brutal when it comes to those Adobe IPL's. But I'm sure by the time you check that Thompson himself, of sombody will get on here and have your answer.

Why didn't you just call the big guy down in Winlock?

it gets more interesting now that im getting more into it. NO cyl gasket, just some remains of black silicone (most of it long gone) clutch side crank bearing REAL sloppy, muffler could be wiggled around before i took it off..
cyl is notched for connecting rod clearence.. crankcase half gasket looks barely there.. no wonder this thing ran like hell.. does have a LOT of compression tho.. thankfully no piston damage.. west coast loggers sure can be hard on saws..

i might be getting a 50" Cannon bar off a Mcculloch SP125 bar for of some of the labor tho.. thats going on my wall for sure!

man, that saw sounds like its a miracle it didnt suffer some kind of severe top end damage. I had an 064 that had good bearings, but the outer race was sliding all around in the case, which felt like bad bearings, but wasnt.

That flywheel with the two slot keys is normal on the 064 and can work on the older 066's. That flywheel takes the current and common version of the ignition module 0000 400 1300. Make sure that you put the flywheel key back in the proper slot. There should a "B" and a "P" marked below the slots. The "B" is for the older analog systems, the "P" is the one you should use for digital systems. Easy to tell when you try and start the saw if you got it on right. If you don't it will just sit and backfire at you when you try and start it, been there, done that.

By the way the 028 is the same way, having 2 cuts in the flywheel. I noticed that when I took mine apart for rebuilding. Only it says B (which is for the Bosch) and the other says S (which is for SEM).
