Probably a dopey question about stihl bar numbers. I just found a bar with the last two digits 31 which I thought was the bar length in inches, but it is a 25 inch bar. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks.

Last two digits have no "mathematical relationship" to the acual bar length... Send me the entire part number and I can tell you more about the bar. The First 4 digits set the major class of bar, the middle three are the manufuacting location or other special codes like paint shema etc, and the last for digits are the type/length/pitch and other info...

Thanks for the offer of further information. Closer inspection of the Stihl bar and chain manual has revealed a check list of the last two digits and the corresponding length of bar. What is strange is that in a couple of instances there are two codes for a particular bar length. Odd that there has to be a code - unless there are bars that aren't an exact number of inches long... :dizzy:
