I have an old Farm Boss Stihl chainsaw that hasn't ran in couple of years or so. I need to clean it up and when I start it, it will idle so high the chain will spin the whole time. Does anyone know the carb settings for one of these, and which screws adjust what? I wish I knew the exact number of the saw, but I do know its a farm boss. Any other suggestions on what to check to get it tuned and going again.

I believe there are several models that have been labled Farm Boss over the years. You'll either have to do a little research to get the correct model, or possibly post a picture or two. My 029 was labeled a Farm Boss when I bought it... my 026 currently has a Farm Boss labeled 16-3/8" bar on it that I needed to buy in a hurry.

Madsens used to have a good link for how to set your carb, but unfortunately their web page is under construction right now. Later on I'll look to see what I can find....gotta rush outta here at the moment.

The 2 screws to adjust your mixture are on the right of the carb
Some times turning them out an additional 1/4 turn will get them going decently . If it doesnt run like it should then better go through the whole procedure,of setting the carb. Do a search on the chainsaw forum as it has been discussed.

You can find and download a owners manual for your model of saw on the stihl website.
There is info on how to set your carb adjustments in the manual

The problem was the gasket was blown between the cylinder and the carb. I think its the intake gasket. Someone had told me that they were known to do it and about all of them came back after a year. Im looking in to getting the gaskets or making them myself tommorrow and this should fix things. Also the carb was plugged solid. Got it running just waiting on the gaskets and a final tuning. Thanks.

You might want to post this in the "Chainsaw" forum of this site for the most responses to your question.

Didn't know there was one. Its fixed and up and running. New gaskets fixed it, and a good carb cleaning.

boss

Most saws need to be backed off and reset with 3 turns both fuel and air then tweek as needed.the mix wont be the same but thats why you tweek.

boss

:help: when adjusting the carb (take note) first try to adjust the fuel, the air should be fine ,that is if you didnt touch it yet.turn clock wise 1/4 turn at a time ( saw should be running at this time)A good indication is when the chain just starts to turn and i do mean just turn .this is when you can ad or remove the air you should have a db reader to indicate a true mix. if things are realy bad, most saws need to be reset. Most saws need to be backed of and turned from 2-3/4 -to 3-1/4 dependig on the saw you must be patient!!!!
and you must listen to your saw it will tell you to much or to little (this is not easy if your not used to it)this message is only to get you out of a ( jam )
please be very very carefull of running saws,YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR DEALER DO THIS!!!!! ITS WORTH IT TO SEND IT OUT, DONT BE A HERO THEY WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!Then the next time you will have better luck.
Ps keep yor saws very clean / and this wont happen
