What do you use to paint the Stihl logo on the starter side of an MS660? My hand isn't steady enough and don't know what kind of paint to use.
Cheers

I have an 066 cover that's missing that decal but I tried to bead blast the paint/powder off and it is really tough stuff. Then what do you color with? Paint or powder..and what color? I did want to keep the 660 parts the same so the saw looks original. This is one of about 8 saws I had to build one out of. Some were 066's.

Here is how i do raised letters or lines on a Stihl, first i get part prepped and ready for paint making sure the raised lines or letters are flat and smooth. The process i'm about to describe will only work with base coat clear coat. I begin by spraying the line or raised letters with black base coat at least four coats then let dry about fifteen minutes. I then spray rest of part Stihl gray, let this dry completely, sometimes an hour or more.
I then wet sand the top surface of line or letters with 1000 grit, take your time and only sand till its black and stop you dont want to go through the black. After sanding blow off and wipe dry. Now tack off and clear it. Done deal. Hope this helps.

Quite a process but sounds brilliant. ( I mean really smart) Where would you get Stihl gray paint? I've seen others use Ford tractor gray but couldn't find anyone in my area that can match that color without several tries.

Thank you, you could take a part and have it chipped to the color you want. Do you have an autobody supply store?

poop so it matches...OPPS wrong thread:hmm3grin2orange:

Just use a Sharpie Marker. The fat ones work best. Might take a couple "coats". Just let it dry between coats or it will just smear around. Easy to use and simple to touch up if you ever want or need to. Works great on the sight lines too.

Valspar brand Ford gray tractor paint is as close to Sthil gray as I have found and I have tried many many different brands and colors. Tractor Supply sells the Valspar brand paint. The Stihl brand paint sucks and it cost about 5 times what the Valspar costs.

If you have some one who will mix paint Stihl Grey is RAL 9010 Pure White or Pantone Cool Grey 1
Stihl Orange is RAL 2004 Pure Orange or Pantone 1655
However I'm still trying to find out which type of paint is best for fuel resistance without a long cure time.

Thanks! Just what I was looking for. Rep sent.

I talked to a paint shop but said it would take several tries to get it right because you have to let dry. Another member here gave a number for the color but didn't match anything they had. I'll try maico490 and blackoak's suggestion and see what they have. I will try shawn022's idea for now. Great idea!

Keep us posted, pictures when done.
