Stihl Model MS 180C, Mini Boss
Did a lot of searches on this and did a lot of the common fixes but still not having any luck here.
Background:
Saw is about three years old and recently given to me by my father. He used several times around his home and never stored the saw with gas in it, meaning he ran the saw till it ran out of gas before storing it.
I get the saw a few months ago and use it to cut up some oak firewood for next winter. Purchased a fresh gallon of 93 octane gas and put in one 50:1 Stihl oil for the mix.
Ran the saw for the whole gallon but noticed towards the end of the gallon the saw was not idling correctly and the saw would continuously conk out when not running it. This led to may restarts. After a while of that, the saw began getting harder and harder to start until it didn’t anymore.
Things Replaced and Checked:
Fresh Gas and Oil Mix (Replaced)
Air filter (Replaced)
Pick up body filter in gas tank, (Replaced)
Fuel line, (Replaced)
Fuel vent in tank, (Checked)
Spark plug, (Replaced)
Coil (checked by pulling plug and attaching jumpers to DC meter and plug/saw frame. Meter spikes when pulling on cord. Also shocked the crap out of my hand.
Spark arrestor screen on muffler, (Checked)
Compression. (Checked by picking up saw by pull cord without cord coming out and also with an automotive screw in tester. Threads too long so had to back out to clear and therefore not getting a good seal, but read 90 PSI?
After each one of these I tried starting the saw with no success.
Carburetor took apart and cleaned all openings with carburetor cleaner.
At this point I was able to start the saw and it ran. I adjusted the carburetor screw until I was able to run the saw full throttle and let go of the trigger and the saw would idle correctly. Ran saw for about 10 minutes like this with no problems. Put saw down for one hour while setting up wood and donning protective gear. Picked up saw to cut wood and it would not start.
Installed carburetor kit with the exception of ovalish shaped metal plates (three) could only find two on the saw and they appeared to be glued in place and could not remove.
Started saw. Saw turns over on cold start 1st or 2nd pull then you kick it up a notch to warm start and pull. Saw starts immediately and then dies out immediately.
What am I overlooking here?
It appears to be starving for gas or air. I believe it to be gas.
What are those three metal plates? How do you get them out? As they appear to be solid metal, are they really necessary to replace?
Thank you,
Tim
