I was searching through craigslist and found an ad for a brand new Stihl MS070 with a 36" bar and chain for $650. That seems pretty cheap for that size of a saw. The pics, which aren't very good, show the plastic still on the top handle. Does Stihl still make these saws? Are they a pro saw?

More than likely Chinese as new ones are labeled MS 720

This is a design from the late 1950s, that was still made by Stihl for certain markets until recently, and may still be made. However, the saw in the ad likely is a Chinese knock-off, and not a real Stihl.

Also, Stihl never called it MS070 that I know, it was Contra, Lightning, 070, and recently MS720....

Memory,
If the "MS 070" is not too far away from you, go look at it and take some close up pics of any areas of concern. I think it would go far to help the forum spot those kind of saws. It looks pretty good to me on my 2" phone screen.

I might do that when if I ever get time and depending on where he is at. I asked him to send me some better pics, the pics in the ad are really blurry.

Couple of things that stand out to me is the rear handle looks really skinny compared to other Stihl saws and it looks like both the oil and fuel caps are in the rear. But again, I am no saw expert. If that design is from the 50's, I find it hard to believe that it would be new.

:laugh::laugh::msp_lol:

The pictures actually are quite blurred - not good at all. I assume that is done on purpose....

There are several fake "types" of the 070 around. This one looks to have the tinted 070 nameplate.
Aliexpress.com : Buy Gasoline Chain Saw STIHL 070 4.8KW 36" GUIDE BAR from Reliable CHAIN SAW suppliers on www.aliexpresswholesale.com

Things to look for which are common to most of the 070 fake "types":
-No registered trademark symbol on the top nameplate or fan housing.
-Allen head instead of slotted head bolts.
-No "Made in Germany/Brazil" on fan housing

I believe Stihl have referred to the 070 as MS070 but not for European/North American markets.
