I guess it depends on what you have. I might be willing to trade for 2 older saws. Everything I read the 395 is a stronger saw. Maybe I need to get it broke in first but to me the 660 seems like a dog. Only comparing it to my 391 but honestly I guess I expected more power.

I agree with above.. I bought a pre owned masterminded 066, and was not all impressed, i put a large outlet on the muffler, and now im pleased. it runs so much better with more ways for the air to escape. Make sure you re tune her though..

Thanks for the input. I retuned and cut a few logs with 25 in. bar and did run much better tonight but I prob. Need to get tanks through it. I hated my 391 until it got broke in. At first that darn 391 seemed way doggie compared to a 455 rancher so I was disappointed in it at first. I took limiter caps off it to and retuned and I liked it much better.

I will try the idling in grass when I retune out of cut I did very fast revs. And I tuned it rich. From dirt bikes and so forth I road them like dad said. Break them in how you are gonna ride them and never had premature failure. But I won't say that is right either. But my 660 has only had 1/2 tank at most burned so I might try idle

I have a well broke in 660 with a dp muffler and retuned. This thing rips pretty good. I'd be happy to trade you for that dog you have. I'll even pay for shipping both ways, but that's only because I'm such a nice guy.

I don't think I'd let mine sit and idle for 1/4 to 1/2 tank. More likely to build carbon IMO. Probably a good idea to give it little extra time to cool down between cuts and refuels otherwise I run them normal.
I've never been disappointed in the power of a 660 or 066, but when I ran an 395 I was expecting more after the reads here making it sound ultimately stronger.

just do what the manual says. 1. no high revs for first 3 tanks. then don't expect max power til tank 15.

Right now your exhaust port is nice and clean- shiny new. If you allow it to idle that long, your almost certain to change that and get some carbon build up on that new smooth metal. IMO, the saw will prob get pretty hot just sitting there too- not great for it eigther. I bought a new 660 last year and had heard about them being slow compaired to the older 066s. For sure, porting a new 660 gets them where the older 066s were stock- and quite a bit more. I sold for a dealership, built and raced 2 stroke dirt bikes for many years, and followed the same methodology with the saw. Per the manual; I did not run my saw WOT unless it was buried in wood. I tried to vary the rpm as much as possible and when I was cutting, I leaned hard on the saw- really made the torque work. I ran exactly 5 tanks though it, then removed the limiters. I ordered a new muffler assembly from Lil' Red Barn in Harrisonburg, VA for $35 shipped. The replacement canister does not have the internal restrictive cage like the OEM one and it has the dual port front cover. I then doubled the opening size of the side exhaust port on the aftermarket canister and tuned accordingly. Made all the difference in the world- it's not even like it's the same saw. I could feel the saw getting stronger tank by tank. After 10 or so tanks, the saw now pulls a 36" RSC much faster than it did with the ultra-restricted stock muffler stock and a 25" RSC set up. When they say this saw needs to breath, they aren't kidding! Good luck---

See Stihl MS660 Manual. Page 34. "During break in period"

"a factory new machine should not be run at high revs (full throttle off load) for the first three tank fillings. This avoids unnecessarily high loads during the break-in period. As all moving parts have to bed in during the break in period, the frictional resistances in the shortblock are greater during this period. The engine develops its maximum power after about 5 to 15 tanks."

One thing I do (guy who was a lot smarter than me told me to do this) is on the very first tank, you start up as normal then just set it in the grass and lett it idle for 1/4 - 1/2 a tank. Something about best way to break it in. Figure it can't hurt, so I do that on every new outta the box saw I get.

No! Stop! The rings need to seat, run it hard from new full WOT in wood.

Just don't WOT out of wood for more than a second or two

Thw worst ms200t I ever had was the one I hung in a tree on tickover for the first tank. Give it the beans with a rich oil mix and all will be well
