OK I am thinking of restoring my Dads old Stihl chainsaw , where do i find paint for it ?

Your dealer can order a can of Stihl gray for you. That's where I got mine. The Stihl black is runnier than water and a waste of time unless you're willing to spray in very thin coats over a fair amount of time. Best to just pick up some black gloss spraypaint at an autobody or hardware store. Mufflers need the high-temp black, of course.

I have another question , should i have the metal and aluminum parts sand blasted ? this is the saw that was buried for a year or two so it would need some filler from oxidation on the bottom because it was upside down .

I never had a project/paint saw so bad that there were voids in the metal. All I did was sand them down with 400 grit, clean and rinse them very thoroughly and paint them. Some guys bake the painted parts in a warm oven to help with paint longevity, but I didn't do that.

Others who have had to fill voids can chime in with what they did. Bondo? Fiberglas? JB Weld? All possibilities, I guess. I like JB Weld for cracks and such, and it's sandable and paintable. If it was my own, I'd go with the Weld. I had a pretty badly cracked out plastic rear handle on one of my saws and the Weld put it right back in tip-top shape.

I haven't had to use Stihl orange for anything. Brad, is that any good?

Oh ya its an 075 .

Can someone post a part number for the Stihl grey spray bombs? I've been to three dealers that think I'm nuts for asking for such a thing and none of them can find it in a catalog (or they don't feel like really looking).

Mine didn't know it was available either, but it was right there in the catalog when they checked. Sounds like a lazy dealer to me. Not like they're making much off a $10 retail spray can, but still. :(

You simply won't obtain a high gloss durable finish from spray can paint, but if you don't have spraying equipment I guess you have no choice unless you pay someone to do it.

The part number on the can for Stihl Gray is 0000-000-2102. The orange is 2101. I thought Stihl sold a black, because I got a can of black from my Stihl dealer, but it must not have been a Stihl paint.

Stihl Gray is #0000-000-2102. Orange is 0000-000-2101. Do as Brad suggested and don't use the Orange. Go Tractor Supply and look for Allis Chalmers Tractor and Implement spray can Orange-5339-03. Its dang close.

Valspar Ford gray is about as close to Stihl gray as I have found in a rattle can. Tractor Supply sells it is good paint. I have restored several and they looked pretty good. Preparation is everything. CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN

Alright I ordered a gasket kit off of EBay , and I am sure once I get it apart i will need more stuff but its a start .

What's the best paint and method to repaint the black raised Stihl logo on the clutch cover if you use the TSC (Valspar) Ford Grey?

Many different methods have been used, from Majic Markers to transfer blocks of linoleum. I use an artists paint brush, camel hair type with about 3-5 hairs in it. A steady hand is helpful and any black paint for metal will do.
