I have the proper Stihl rivets and new top cover badge for the 084, the question is: How do you attatch the new tag with those rivets?

If they are solid rivets then you would usually use a mandrel and a air or electric rivet gun to draw the rivet. But if you do not have one you could always ping the rivet, and I always like to make aluminum washers if I am riveting plastic so if I over draw the rivet it will not harm the plastic.

Insert them into the tag and cover, put it upside down on a flat piece of steel (back of vice, anvil etc) and tap them with a center punch, That flares them out and they hold forever.

It is amazing what Stihl charges for the emblem rivets. I am glad my drawers are full. As for attachment it is simple. As long as both ends of the rivet are larger than the bore then the emblem will stay in place. The rivets can be pinged in various ways.

The msrp on the rivet is 15 cents. sure, that's expensive for a rivet, but... the typical order is 2... I'm sure they make a fortune picking two rivets, putting them in a bag, and associated paper work.

Any part though an OEM (not just chainsaws) is expensive. 10X on their cost is not atypical. You are paying for the convenience, long term warehousing, and associated management. You can of couse spend 10 minutes looking on the internet for 3mmx6mm rvits, then buy two and have then shipped to you, or, drive across town to find them. ;)

If the MSRP is $0.15 in your book then they are much cheaper from your dist. The standard 3x6 rivet is 0000-974-1000. They come 50 to a bag and the dealer cost is $0.50 with the MSRP $0.99. This is from MVS. I guess the distrubuter in your area is much cheaper.

I'll have to agree with you on that one.Stihl,Harley Davison,John Deere,Caterpillar. They all see you coming.Never the less no matter how you slice it,it can be outragious at times.

True-er words have never been spoken. I love going to Deere for somthing simple such as a seal. "It's gonna be 26.95"

Ok, I'll think on it, go directly to Napa and get the same seal for $8.59.

Well you can do that for most things.How-some-ever good old Stihl has you by the short hairs because 99 percent of the components are propritory OEM.Actually as I've said before nearly every thing made in Germany subscibes to this theory.

Trot on down to the Chevy dealer and buy a cam for a 350,couple hundred bucks perhaps.Same cam,NAPA,Parts America etc, half price. The last D4 Cat I rebuilt ,rings,Caterpillar $350.Rings,Sealed power,$95,identical part.

In the world of repair parts I can fully understand a dealer up charge but not to the extent these pirates of commerce have been doing for decades.

Absolutely! I found out about wonderful Stihl design when I tried to find a clutch side bearing for my 064. Not gonna happen with that double thick race!

Hmmm... that is available aftermarket! and in stihl's defense (this time) it's a definite design improvment - sure made a big difference in clutch drum life and is now standard on even the 029!
