Got a stihl, not sure what model it is?? Is there a screen inside the carb where the fuel line feeds in? Fuel runs through the line from the tank but the saw wont run. If I spray carb cleaner it runs but stalls after it is all burned off. So.... I am thinking it is clogged but I didn't want to push through it if there is a screen. Anything else I am overlooking? Thanks

That's an 015AV. The 015's have somewhat of a cult following. Many parts are no longer available. But careful maintenance will keep it alive for a long time. YES there is a screen in the carb, NO that's not likely your problem. I'm betting the diaphragms in the carb are too stiff to do ther jobs. A carb overhaul is in order. A carb kit can be had for about $10.00 an air filter is still available and someone here (maybe me even) has an air filter cover to spare. If you do not want to attempt the carb fix send the carb to me, I will overhaul it , test it on one of my 015's and send it back to you ready to run. I am in Beacon, NY about an hour and a half from the Throggs Neck bridge. Do not use the saw without an air filter.

old sthil 15av

robk880 yup and yup to sedanmans advice, and ya can't beat that deal! happy holidays (heres to older wiskey, younger women, faster horses and more money!) when i grow up i still want to be me. ZERO :angry2: :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

i had the same problem with an 036. it would run on carb cleaner till it ran out but i had no throttle response. it turned out to be a crank seal. does the 015 have throttle response?

Yes, the throttle does respond. It just burns the carb cleaner even faster... I got the saw for cheap so hopefully all it needs is the carb rebuilt... we will see

sounds like the other fella hit the nail on the head with the carb thing. good luck to you.

Seems to me it would be easy to burn a saw up with carb cleaner, as it doesn't have mix oil in it. What do you guys think?

itll burn one up for sure but not in 15 seconds . if youe really anal about it you can squirt mix gas into it for diagnosis. but you wont burn a mill on 15 seconds of carb cleaner. its absoulutley impossible even for a cheap saw.

RobK880, Your carb sat in the "soup" for a few days and on the 2nd attempt at cleaning it, it runs quite well on my saw. If I had your phone number, I'd let you hear it run before I swapped my carb back on. Paul

The other guys are telling you right their is a screen in the carb itself by the needle and seat.

I'm not replying to your carb problem. I think you have a collectors saw in your possesion. That is a rear mount handle on an 015. Most versions of this saw were top handled, I had two at one time, still have one. That saw looks in great shape for it's age I'd hang onto it and baby it.

yep i had one .. i waited several months
for the fuel lines etc. to come in.. after that i sold it.. amonth later the dealer called with the line.. too late..

Thanks for rebuilding the carb Paul, the saw started right up and and sounds great. I have now found my next problem. Looks like the clutch is no good. The chain spins no matter how low the idle screw is set. The engine will turn if I spin the clutch drum. So...

015

This may use 1 sprinf that wraps around the clutch shoes. It is either broken or disconnected at the spring ends. You may be able to bed a coil to get it back together. I believe this has been NLA for a while, but I am sure someone here still has one. The newest style clutch was the present style 3 shoe type.
I have never tried it, but an 020 clutch may work.

Yes it only has one spring. It was still together but had some crud in it. I took it apart and cleaned it out. The spring still had tension on it. Still the chain spins... The shoes aren't gummed up, they move freely. I'm gonna try and stop by a local shop with the clutch this week and see if they see something I don't.

clutch

Does the sprocket spin freely with the clutch off?
If not, the oil pump gear behind the pump may be binding on the cranl. Pull it off and open the hole slightly. The sprocket bearing could be binding. Also had clutch shoes wear and produce a burr on the edges. remove and file the edge on the side of the shoes off. Just a few things I have ran into.
