I have an 041 that is apart. I used a brass drift and a hammer to pull the flywheel. It worked , but I am sure that the correct puller would have been better. My other saws shouldn't need to much enngine work for a while. Does Stihl make a flywheel puller that works on many models? A tach is my next item to purchase.

Yes they do... three different models to cover all the saws they'e ever made. Sure makes it easy. The most common one is inexpensive. Hammering on a flywheel - don't... and it really does a number on your bearings. Just don't use a three jaw type puller on the outer rim of a flywheel - real bad...
There are several threads on AS about tachs. IMO.. the best tach currently made is the DTI-20k - about $99. It has a very fast response time. If you can live with slower response(they work), $24-60 is all you have to spend. The Stihl EDT-5 is the nicest tach around but is no longer available new.
There are many specialized tools, but you can get away with some pretty crude devices - you just have to know how things are supposed to come apart. Check this thread - splitting the 066 cranks case. I have an example of an 044 case split and reassembly using both home made tools and OEM.
