I don't know for sure, but I'd be surprised if your question won't be answered with a "yes, you can swap them directly"; but I suspect you'll have to change the muffler too.

I understand the 034 Super has the exact same bore and stroke as the 036 which replaced it and that they both share (quite) the same crankcase with the 034 (which is still available in Canada and elsewhere as the MS340 last I knew).

Close (with no major disassembly) comparison between my 036 and my neighbor's 034 Super leads me to believe there is indeed the possibility of a very large amount of direct parts interchangeability between the two.  In fact, a rubber tit on the underside of the top cover on my saw fits into a hole marked "036" while right next to it is another hole marked "034".

Thanks glens and 066. I have a regular 034--not super--that runs decently and I was contemplating the purchase of an 036 jug and piston I ran across. Would the power gain justify the cost to replace? Would the gain be marginal or significant? If the change entails modification or muffler replacement, I feel it would be advantageous to leave it alone, though.

Less than 10% increase in displacement, all else being equal, might net you less improvement than switching from semi-chisel to chisel chain would (or from round-ground chisel to square-ground chisel; either of which chain changes should net about 15%).  It might just be a bit of fun to do though, if the price is right and if you have the time.  I could well be wrong about the need to use a different muffler.  If there's no height difference between the exhaust ports (or width of the port), the differing depth (front to back) might be accommodated with some washers behind the lower mounts.  I must say this is speculation on my part.

034

I believe you will find this to be a bolt on. The only difference being a larger bore. I will check on the stroke, but I think the previous post is correct. In some of the replacement manufacturer's listings, you can usually find the largest bore is being sold as it will fit on the regular models. The only saw that was stroked differently in the Stihl line was the 024 super. Same size piston as an 024, longer stroke. This has now become the 026
028 replacement will be 028 super, 034=036, 038=super or magnum, 045=056super(magnum has a larger bolt pattern).

More about the muffler...

I'd picked up a pretty good used muffler which has way more stock outlet area for my 036.  The inlet very marginally obstructed the cylinder outlet but it did so mainly by being slightly offset vertically.  I cleaned up the opening just a little anyway.  Not wanting to meddle with the turned lip of the second layer of metal for fear of compromising it's integrity (it must have some reason for existence), I took an old chain file and stretched the four mounting holes vertically 1/16" or less.  Now no obstruction with no weakening, and the whole muffler exchange process woke the saw up a bit by seat of the pants reckoning.  I plan to confirm or deny that with some comparative timed cuts some day, though the lesser restriction has to help lower equipment temperature regardless.

Just thought I'd mention it in case it pertained here any at all.
