I just replaced the spring that holds the choke in 4 positions but it still doesn't operate in all four positions. After it warms up it goes straight to stop and in order to stop it I have to choke it. How is this supposed to work?

In the OFF postion, the saw ignition is shorted to ground by the contact on the throttle rod being shorted though the spring to the Green wire. Did you replace the wire that plugs into the spring?

In the idle postion the spring holds the throttle rod in that postion.

In "hot start", the postion is held by a tab on the throttle rod locking onto the trigger.

In choke, the spring holds the throttle rod in that position AND the tab on the end of the rod actuates the choke in the air filter.

Andy,
Can that spring be rebent to start working correctly again. I keep messing with mine and it will work for a while, then not. Is it better to replace the spring when the saw won't shut off consistently. Does the green terminal need replaced also?
Thank you.

Replace the terminal only if messed up (don't ever grip it with pliers!).
Rebending doesn't work - new springs are much better (slightly different geometry), and for $2.00....

If it still doesn't work, replace the throttle rod as well - about $8.00.

Sometimes the tank case mounts get stretched and the rod jumps up a little when actuated - take out the rod, heat the mounts gently, squeeze a LITTLE, reassemble..

I've had to clean the contact on the grounding wire(green) with a little emery cloth on one of my older saws to make a good ground. Works like a charm now. Good luck.

Thanks fellas.
I am not having any issues except the saw doesn't consistently shut off in the off position. I have to push down just a tad and that does it.

Before I joined this site, I had the saw tuned up locally and he didn't have the part so he "fiddled" with the spring. Didn't work any better or worse when he was done with it.

What holds it in the run position? Mine goes all the way up to stop, but it doesn't ground out. I can choke it, then it it grounds out.

Any pics?

The shape of the spring and the detent on the throttle rod hold it in postion (curve on end of the spring and the cut out in the detent.). The next position "up" (off) shorts the two contacts together and kills the spark.

I figured it out- (Actually I had it repaired) The spring jams on the throttle rod and pops over the mechanism instead of resting under it. Even after the repairman fixed it and had it working, I choked it and the spring jammed and up and over it came. I am going to lube it or maybe replace the rod if it still fails. Thanks!
