What kind of weather is ideal for causing storm damage? It's 4/16 and we are supposed to be getting 8 - 12 inches of wet, heavy, snow tomorow. I am just curious what kinds of effects that type of snow will have on trees that are about to break bud? I remember back in `97 the trees here got MESSED up BAD when an ice storm came through on 4/1

Ice

When the ice storm leaves 3/4" of ice on the trees they start to break apart from too much weight. Add wind gusts at 30 mph and 1/2" of ice will work trees over. When you get cold air out of Canada on the ground and warm moist air from the south rize over top of the cold is the best for ice storms. You ought to have another one coming your way in a day or two.

    We are only getting about 4" at most. No storm damage as far as I can see. What really ticks me off though is that I stayed at home today instead of going to school for a FREE Arbormaster class. I felt like there was something wanting me to stay home, for what reason, I do not know.

There is something to be said for striking when the iron is hot in reguards to storm work.

I just think it is wrong to pray for misery to come upon tree owners.

I have had a winter made by storm damage. You just seem way too excited about misery coming to tree owners.

Nate, I wasn't looking forward to the storm damage in regards to homeowners' missery. I was looking forward to it as a way to generate lots of work for tree companies around here.

Ice Damage

Having experienced the Ice Storm of 1998 that hit eastern Canada, and northern NY and New England, ice is way worse than wet snow, which tends to fall off trees at higher accumulations. Damage to trees started at less than one inch of accumulation or about 25mm, and many places got three times that amount, which had a catastrophic effect on the trees. At 45mm, the hydro transmission towers started to snap and the few places that got in excess of 90mm or more than three inches of ice were flattened. We had freezing rain for three days straight.

I think most of us have gotten excited by the thought of a big storm, then when we see it we realise we should not wish it on anyone.

I used to joke durring slow times that we need a good one to blow through, I'd only seen small localized weather. After my first big one, I hope to never see any of it in my back yard!

Amen, John. I like to work and winter storms have helped my pocketbook but that isn't the way I want to get work!. Rather than profiting from someone else's misfortune I would MUCH prefer to get work that the homeowner wants to do for the good of his/her trees.

By the way-WELCOME BACK!!!:D

treeman82, we got hit real hard in the Rochester area....should be lots of work now and also down the road.

Jeff

Hey Treeman, hook your chiptruck and chipper up and head out to Oswego, NY, you will have all the work you can handle for the next month or so. Most of the clearance work(proximity to powerlines) has already been done by qualified crews but all of the branches and whole trees are still right where they fell as long as the roads are passable and those that were in the road were trimmed back just enough to permit passage. There should be plenty of work for anybody that just wants to get some chainsaw or chipper time and you should be able to make some "stupid" money. Russ

Funny I live directly north of Oswego (and Rochester), and the north side of Lake Ontario received no damage in this storm. Probably the worst storm of the year considering the wet snow, freezing rain, ice pellets and rain, but no tree damage.

Think it depended on where you were; it was a very localized storm. We only got snow and ice pellets here, just east of Ottawa. Just enough to affect business in that the ground is again covered with that $#@! white stuff, and people are not thinking about their trees and hedges. I spoke to my mother last night in the east end of Toronto and they had exclusively freezing rain, and a lot of it.

I be curious where your mother is. Between Belleville and Toronto, there is no evidence of any damage, just inconvient heavey snow etc.

M

About four miles north of the 401 and just east of the Don Valley Parkway/404. You can get some really weird lake effect there-in Don Mills it will not have snowed at all and ten miles north, it snows.
