I have a couple port a wraps I made for my own use which I must say is very little. I know people have built their own but I was wondering is anyone has ever built a true port a wrap on a plate with a strap, kind of like the GRCS system uses? I like the idea of having the port a wrap mounted a little more solid and since I fab all of my stuff out of scrap I have laying around I figure its worth a try. I don't see any negatives to it but just wanted to ask. I have plenty of plate and a couple of load straps and winches so I figured it my be worth a shot since it would only cost me a hour or so labor. Im not a commercial arborist, just stuff for friends and friends of friends and friends of the family mostly and the only time I do use a lowering device is just to keep lawn damage to a minimum since I don't do any hazardous removals or pruning so if I do build it, it may be a while before I get to try it out. So whats the opinion here, is it worth it? Good idea? Bad idea? School me please! Homemade Port A Wrap 002.jpg

I dont see any advantage to a soild plate and strap.

It is gonna make it heavier.
Gonna need 2 people to attach it to the tree
If you drop big pieces on it and its not attached tight enough to the tree it will slide up the tree.
If the tree is odd shaped it will not sit flat against the tree.

The nice thing about the sling attachment is its light, one person attachable, and tree shape doesnt matter.

Someone posted a pic here once of one they made, can't remember who right now, but it had a plate and they cut out a notch in the tree for the plate to lock into so it wouldn't ride up the tree.

Why is that? How are you securing your port-a-wrap to the tree now?

I like securing mine to the tree about knee height if it allows and I make sure it's tight, secured and dressed right with a cow hitch. Having as little play as possible with the loop or eye end keeps it from moving so much for me.

I've tried a few different things as far as attaching my porty to the base of the tree. I mostly just use a 5/8" or 3/4" whoopie.

I've tried and kind of like using a 3/8" grade 80 or 100 tow chain with a big shackle and a grab hook.

Wasn't this thread a whole lot longer before the crash? I wonder how much content got lost?
yeah, I was noticing that myself. I am kinda amazed that Darin was able to keep this much. Poor guy, he has been thru a war, going to have some wounds. I tried getting a hacker to go after the linkbucks dude, but think he was all talk.
