I need to get a copy of the Arborists' Certification Study Guide. Does anyone know where I can buy a used copy for a reasonable price? The cheapest I have found one so far is around seventy dollars. I am looking into starting an arbor related business but would like to go ahead and work on my certifications. If anyone has any suggestions, please email me. Thanks.
Don

If you're starting any kind of arbor related business then buying the Arborists Certification Study Guide will undoubtedly be one of the least expensive items you will need. Who would actually sell their own copy is beyond me. If you beleive in arboriculture then join the ISA and your local chapter and purchase your study and reference material from them in support of a organization that beleives in proper tree care.

Look I'm not trying to discourage you if you're looking to start your own business and practice proper tree care good on ya. I'm just starting out myself and that's how I know first hand that it's going to cost quite a bit. So just know that ahead of time that you're going to need some kind of capital to get in.

Oh ya welcome to arboristsite.

p.s. my wife read my original post and called me a a--hole.

Join ISA and you can buy the guide at a deep discount. Your national membership will cost you a bit, as will joining your local chapter, but then you will get a discount on taking the test. The old adage about spending money to make money applies here. Don't short-change yourself. ISA is a great organization that provides a multitude of services that help to maintain and promote the professionalism of our line of work. If you read their journals and take time to understand and internalize what you read, you will be better able to demonstrate to your client base the fact that you are a knowledgeable individual who has their best interests in mind when it comes to providing needed services for their trees. Good luck!

If there are any colleges near you check their books store. Here at Umass there is a class that requires you to buy the book and I know a lot of kids sell it back to the school at the end of the semester.

Nearby college doesn't have any classes dealing with arborculture, so book store is out. I live in Louisiana and looks like I need an Arborist License from the state in order to do any type of tree work. From what I've heard, I have to pass a test to get a license and the test covers information found in the study guide. What I'm looking at doing is tree removal on a part time basis with my dad. Dead or live trees, broken limb removal, such as that. Not interested in pruning, shaping or doctoring trees to start out. Will get to that when more comfortable with tree work. We have a bucket truck and chipper to work with.

Bucket truck and chipper? Just buy the book. If you're really interested in tree work you'll love the study guide it's awesome. It really opened my eyes. Another must have I think is Arborist Equipment by Don Blair an excellent book. If you're going to be doing tree work you need to buy books. I've only been exposed to real arboriculture in the last two years and have easily spent over a thousand dollars on books.

The cds and the book together are what I have and I find it really helps to be able to read a chapter and then listen to it in the truck the next day or vice/versa. I wouldn't want just the cds though because you have no illustrations and the questions at the end of a chapter are a little harder to follow on the cds atleast for me because my cd player in my truck doesn't pause so you don't get long to think about each question. It's also very handy to be able to work on the questions and go back through the chapter to look up one you don't know or got wrong. That would be almost impossible I think on the cds.

Just my take but I think the cds were meant to go with the book not as a replacement. I know you can buy them seperately but I think that was intended for people who already had the book.
