Hey Guys, Has anyone ever tried using a segmented diamond grinding wheel on a body grinder for fast touch up of the carbides? The segmented are cheaper, but the gaps between the pads have me a little cautious. I'm hoping the speed of the rotation would make that a non-issue?

Well, I went ahead and tried the setup. Spent $65 for the diamond wheel and $45 for a hand held grinder. It will do the job, but it's a very slow process. I was hoping to find an alternative to using a green stone because I didn't like all the dust that produces. (That stuff is bad for your health, carcinogens, cancer) It'll do in a pinch I suppose....

sharpening

I have been trying to find a decent 4.5 inch angle grinding wheel with little luck. Ill post if i do. Hand grinding is the way to go for getting it done quickly. Diamond bench grinder is better overall quality and sharpen.

Green wheel for 4.5 grinder

I have a Carlton 7015 with a Sandvic wheel I sharpen the teeth daily with awesome results I grind 8000+ stumps per year and by just spending 30-45 mins per day I reduced my annual teeth costs by 70% I don't even spend 500 per year any more on teeth and generally it is tue to breakage. The best wheel I've found is sold by Kieth @ Alpine Machine in Washington you'll have to Google him because this site dosnt like it when I post phone numbers like advertisement. Good luck it works great

I use a regular bench grinder and switch the wheel to a diamond or a green wheel, keep in mind the dust, so wear a mask and have a fan blowing, keep kids clear. Green teeth 1100 series I put in my hand drill and spin as the grinder is spinning and literally 30 seconds a tooth and a super fast sharp edge. off to the next .... find me a better set up and Ill consider it, but have ground other types and Im pretty sure it wont get any easier that this.

Some times I have to question things. Did you mean 800 stumps a year? In an average 8 hour work day, you have to grind 2.8 stumps an hour every day of the year. I literally mean 365 days. Yet you claim to spend almost an hour sharpening meaning you have to make up almost 2 stumps, not ground during that time. Then to claim you spend less than $500 on teeth. Come on, come on, has to be a typo. Oh another thing, who is taking down all these trees?

Doubted this too but if I look at a 90' row of 5" pine stumps(hedge) you make 90 stumps in 2hrs easy.

With a well maintained 7015 and one or two more grinders + Employees and good advertising it seems reasonable and sounds like a well made up business.

If you got a few hedge- and landclearing jobs with that Background, 2500 stumps/y can easily be done.
If you take care of your teeth not spending more than 500 is possible too.

Cheers
