i have a 630b with the w41770 wisconsin. that is not running good. The engine is spitting and sputtering at higher rpms. I just rebuilt the carb thinking that was my problem. But it is still doing the same thing. Does anyone know if this engine has a set of points, because i cant find them.

Pull the distributor and rotor and the points should be underneath. Bad rotor, distributor cap, or points could be problem. Cracked spark plug might be suspect also. Lot of vibration on those machines. Also check plug wires, a split in one could cause problems also. Good luck.

Thanks i may try the plugs, thats a cheap fix if that is the case. I did try pulling the distributer cap off and found no points there.

That's a nice engine - I had one on a boom lift.
I don't recall the ignition (points versus module)

On my old case, the points are under a metal cover...pull the cap and rotor and see if there is a metal cover that will lift out over the dist. cam.

Hi Kev,
These engines come with points or electronic ignition, dizzy same on both units, lift the cap off and remove rotor button and plastic sheild, you will see points or little black module box. if points remove and clean them and set to i think from memory, .030". Also check timing, remove flywheel mesh guard, find an X marked on the end of a fin, mark it in yellow or white, in the flywheel surround there is a timing notch, locate this, on yours use the upper mark, install timing light and run engine to 2200 rpm and alter if not correct.

I have had many of these doing the same, in chippers, grinders and road saws.
Also check the throttle shaft for wear, can cause them to lean out, check float height and needle and seat, can flood the engine at high revs when the lift pump is delivering max fuel to carby.

These are prone to crackin heads also, if the cooling fins dirty engine can overheat and cause head to crack.

Ive also had alot that have been dusted, check for blow by.

If you need more spec's or info PM me and ill dig out my service manuals.

I worked for a Wisco dealer for 5 years and have seen alot of these.
