I know these questions are hard for someone to answer. But, renting a stump grinder saying the biggest available what can you take out in a day? Just to get an idea what I'm looking at for removing stumps is. This is an impossible question but how long does it take per stump for certain sizes in your guys' experiences. This may be impossible, but for clearing a decent area of land could renting a stump grinder be efficient as opposed to renting a excavator and bucking off at the top of stumps?

Just any information on stump grinding would be very helpful.

Thank you.

The excavator will kill a stumper in production. If you have a large amount to do. Otherwise it won't be worth the fee to get it out there.

I can wipe out 40-60 10-16" stumps per day with an sc252. That being said if the trees are not down yet and you can get a med excavator there, cut them high and the stumps should pop right out. There is no comparison. If the stumps are all flush cut now, depending on how long ago and tree species, a grinder is probably your best bet. As far as time, a 14" Locust stump will take less time than a 10" pine unless you are chasing roots too.

If you could tell us what machine you are going to rent with hopefully new or sharpened teeth somebody familiar with it could give you an idea of how long per stump of a certain size and species. Without at least that information your question is impossible to answer.

I really don't have that information so I understand its impossible. But I got a couple good answers. I'm looking at land that is not cleared right now. Just trees, but wondering if learning to climb to limb trees so they just get pulled out with the excavator, bucked at the base then skidded to a pile would be worth it. Right now I'd be looking at rending a stump grinder or an excavator. Wondering what everyone thinks about using a stump grinder for a mass number of trees. So my options are cut them to the ground then use a stump grinder or limb them possibly and use an excavator to pull them out. But then you have a decent sized hole and a stump to worry about.

I don't have specifics yet but its 36 acres and I'm only looking to clear a few at a time. I don't have a lot of equipment but was wondering if people tend to learn towards stump grinders more than shovels for clearing an acre or two at a time. My thoughts are learning to climb to de-limb and top a tree. Is that even a practice people would ever do to clear land? I know the work behind dropping a fully limbed tree and getting it out of the way in time for dropping the next tree. My thoughts are if the limbing work is done while standing and the tree only needed one cut then get skidded with a tractor a lot of trees could get uprooted in a little amount of time (equipment rental time). But if stump grinding is an efficient way of clearing land, trees could be dropped, skidded and cleaned up, then bring a stump grinder in and tackle a lot of stumps in a few days. The trees aren't real young but not all huge, I only have a rough idea of the land. I will know more in a week or so.
