So how many Of you call "811" before you Dig or Grind to have utilities located? I believe it is the law, but how many of you actually do it?

Almost always call. Received a lecture from the gas company this past fall for not calling. There is a nice sized storage line on the property. We knew this as we cleared for the replacement line earlier that year. It doesn't matter that we knew where the utilities were located. By law we still needed the ticket number. Also remember that they're only good for ten days. Even when I'm working for the gas company we are required to call in the Oups. The inspector shortly after receives a phone call and then will mark the lines. When it comes to bigger lines they need to be present.

I almost always do, I'm still amazed at how much stuff is under ground. Especially in areas that have been developed over 40 years or so. I did a big silver maple a few years ago, the old man planted it in 1955 when he moved in, he got mad because I had them come out and he swore their was nothing under it. Turns out their was a main gas line right under it... They wouldn't tell me how deep do I ground shallow.

We call for 99% of stumps there are those few that are for a neighbor since we are there that get done but I find the gas meter wires are overhead things are looking good if any of the wires are under ground I won't touch a stump.

However I have hit gas lines and cable lines that the prick felt unnecessary to mark.

The sewer and water company that our secretary used to work for hit a gas main on one occasion and a fiber optic line on another because the utility marking company failed to do there job. Big open empty lots guy just marked ok but it was actually a right of way for the entire towns gas supply
