Today the company I work for, more or less me and the owner, had a sub come in to remove a linden tree. I was running the ropes for the rigging, after the owner of the other company was done bombing the sidewalk, road, and lawn which left many holes. I was using a portawrap which ran up through a biner and strap as a false crotch which I was not a huge fan of to begin with. The pieces being lowered were attached to the rope by a strap to a biner to some metal end cap on the rope which I had also never seen before. So the guy would cut the piece and I would let it run and slow it before the ground. When he saw how I was doing it he lost his nuts up in the bucket. He went on to yell at me telling me I was doing it wrong and that I would give him a bad name if something went wrong. Mind you that he has not PPE or harness in the bucket and was one handing like a mad man. His two groundies also had no PPE and were also telling me I was lowering all wrong. So the usual words of what I would have like to have said were going through my head. One of the groundies showed me how they "rig and lower". 1. Take 5 wraps with rope and lock it off. 2. Ding nuts in the bucket cuts the piece and shock loads the hell out of the rope and rest of the system. 3. Let the pieces smash into the tree, bucket boom, ding nuts in the bucket or whatever else is close. My day ended there and I sat around and watched for the rest of the day with my boss. During one of the breaks the homeowner was talking to ding nuts he was being all big and macho, he is also really big. She asked him how tall the tree was, "I'd say probably around 90 feet, telephone poles are 60 feet, so yeah about 90 feet." If any of you know of a 90 foot linden let me know, this tree was probably 60 feet 65 max. The lady went one to tell him what a great job they were doing which just fueled his ego even more. Today was just a really aggravating day being around such stupid "professionals".

Don't sweat it pard stupid pros eventually pay the toll but understand your
sentiments. I have seen many dumases that thought they were all that
and then some.I always say I am not the best but can climb right with them.
No one likes a balloon headed egomaniac, I worked around one a few months
ago and finally told him if he wanted a fight he was doing a good job. It was
funny, he looked puzzled, I informed him the way he was talking to me was
not going to cut it and quoted some of his words back to show him what
he sounded like. He grinned and said I was kinda asking for that huh:monkey:
I would not put up with much from no one if your right, some of these
yahoos don't even understand the way they act and need to have it
known. I have shut up several in my time and lord willing will be able to
for several more years.

Lets look at it from the other side for a second... well what do you think?
On a job where alert means alive I am nothing short of a discurteous prick who barks at people and if you start to annoy me, which is easy to do, I will let you know. I am certainly some type of egomaniac. I usually shy away from extra links in my portawrap.
I have to look at it from the guy who was running the bucket. I am just looking at it from his side and not making any judgment. Maybe he was the only nut who would touch that job for what your buddy put on it?
So he was nuts and you are right that you should not have to work with it. Good choice just to watch .

And you WERE probably lowering wrong, wrong for the guy in the bucket.
It tough when strangers do a job like that, all sorts of weird stuff happens.

I could show you a 90 foot Linden. Its in Warwick RI. Other than that, sounds like that guy was wrong about a lot.

Yeah like poles are mostly 35 foot above ground of course there are taller
but normal primary poles are 35. I have a good big leaf linden in my back
forty around 65 footer. I have seen trophy's in many species though and
sometimes they get bigger if conditions are right.

The sub company put $1800 on it and my boss added another $650, if I had bid it I would have put $3500 on it.

You're right I was doing it all wrong, ding nuts never had a problem with making cuts when I was running the ropes. When his guys were doing it half the time spent making the cut was battling with a pinched bar.

I am sure we will be working with them in the future and I will remember to bring my camera to get some video of them in action.

Thanks guys, Tyler

Funny, you have absolutely nothing nice to say about this guy, yet you are going to hire him again in the future? Why? Bucket guys are a dime a dozen around here-one doesn't work out, there are a dozen others to choose from.

I do quite a bit of subcontracting, and to be honest, i'll tell the company i'm working for right up front that it's my guys and my equipment getting the tree on the ground. Their help and advice is not appreciated or needed. If they don't like how i do something, they can hire someone else. But that's mainly because i've subbed out to too many companies that have never rigged with blocks or ever seen a grcs in action. The way i look at it is, you are hiring a guy for his expertise for a job that you do not have the skills or equipment for-if you don't like how he does it, either go with someone else or do it yourself.

he is also really big.
I'm curious as to what this has to do with anything.
