Picked up this nice lookin ol' 044. If memory suits me, this is a 10mm by serial numbers, but just barely. It was at a pawn shop for 50% off back to school lawn & garden sale. Quick glance looked ok. Some epoxy on the front of the case, but optimistically guessed it was a leaky case gasket and a backyard repair was done. Still, it runs like an old 44. I tilted it on to clutch cover side for chipping away the epoxy to find how bad the issue was (Dented starter half of the case). Then it leaked fuel; crack in the tank (in pictures). Got if for a little over a hundred bucks. Dismaying... What would you do? I don't want to replace the entire case because of the serial numbers...

Would you replace half of the case? Is this even doable? OEM fuel tank or chinese?

I'm torn, but I'm into it now, right? It's like a whole damn rebuild now. might as well do bearings and seals? I could sell it on here, but to get my $ back for the saw and shipping, that's not a good deal for someone here.

It should not be leaking fuel from the area pictured.

Occasionally a set of cases sells on this site. Keep an eye on the trading post. I wouldn't repair it with chinese junk.

Why are you worried about the serial number? Did you buy it to flip? If you did, most buyers will be good with "10mm saw, all OEM". It's past being in collector condition, it's a runner. If you bought it to cut wood with, the serial number doesn't matter.

I just went back and see the crack in the fuel tank. I think that could be repaired. Just don't go chipping at it after you repair it...

Thanks! I appreciate your suggestion. No Chinese and I'm not going to replace tank with OEM, expensive. I think I might fix the tank. The crack is huge though. I may sell the saw in a couple of years. I go through saws constantly; I'm never satiated. I Like new to me saws. Dont want to try to explain to someone its a 10mm when the case doesn't match. Can't flip 44s here in the West. 3 to 5 hundred is what they go for, at least in Idaho.

Do you happen to know if a later 044 case will fit an earlier? Cant find much for part numbers.

Thanks hdtoolmakr! I may have access to an 044 AV case I was gonna grab up. But I imagine it being an AV it could be the 15mm crank instead of the 14mm I would have on my bench. After you said something, I did some research on here and found that out.

Can we see the side of the case in front of the starter and next to the muffler? It should be a concave round shape if it’s a 10mm.

I wouldn’t use a 12mm case with the 10mm crank. It’s doable, but you’ll lose case compression and have a dud on your hands.

I have used 10mm tanks. Ugly but working. If you’re not gonna flip the saw, you could try an AM MS440 tank. Will have the floppy cap which can be replaced with a @Definitive Dave flippy eliminator cap.

If you go with a 12mm case and crank (stronger-that’s why it was swapped), you will need a 12mm piston and pin bearing in order to run it. Your 10mm top end will work and the saw will run just as well (possibly less throttle response). It’s mostly the jug porting that gives the coveted 10mm it’s extra balls, not the lighter crank.
