Tachostand

I've made one of these before but not quite in as easy a manner as this, and just in case others haven't seen one, here is my tachostand. The bracket is taken from the front alloy duralier of a bicycle and I have just bolted a rectangle of 1/4" ally plate onto that, and then bolted the tacho onto the plate. The bracket is easily removed to transfer to another saw and fits most wrap handles. Very useful for tuning and looking at RPMs in the cut. You know how you always need than 3rd hand when doing this. In this case this is a milling saw so that's why it's on the side of the wrap handle, as this becomes the top when the saw is in the mill. For regular saw tuning the bracket can clamp on the top or other side.

And this comes from someone who has lots of experience fabbing stuff.
It has started my mental juices flowing for a holder for some of the larger tachs.


When I first saw the title of your posting, I thought you'd designed a holder for tacos. It keeps your Mexican lunch clean while you finish cutting!

Yeah me too!, when I first wrote the thread title I even wrote it as "Taco stand"!

Thanks. It's not a permanent installation, just while tuning or measuring the saw RPM while milling . Once I'm done I'll be removing the clamp.

No. Look at this, then go to the bicycle shop and ask them for a junk one to cut up if you don't want to pay $15 plus shipping.

Like this. Use a hacksaw or angle ginder with thin kerf cut-off wheel to cut across the clamp in direction shown.

I get all kinds of nice alloy parts from bicycles people throw out. The remote throttle and all my handles on my mills are made from alloy bike stems.

Cheers Stipes. Here it's still too hot to mill, only 90F (supposed to reach 102) but high humidity, plus I have a whole of of paper to push before monday. Instead I'm stuffin around on AS!!!

Me too. I drive a commercial van and am forever dumpster diving for steel and timber and bicycles with alloy bits. Combined with piles of assorted short logs and slabs on my diveway and back yard, it all looks like a bit of a garbage dump especially since we live on a small (1/6 acre) inner city lot (wife is pretty good about all this). Fortunately have a mate who is a lot worse than I am, he has train carriage parts and wheels in his back yard! One of the best things I have picked up recently is a 10 ft long set of heavy duty rollers (yes I did ask for permission in case it was a mistake) which I want to turn into infeed and outfeed resaw rollers for my bandsaw.

The fact that I'm pretty sure you have a "handlebar" throttle on you saw is even cooler.

Cheers guys, here's the MC aux throttle thread in case you haven't seen it (things sweep by so quickly in this forum). This throttle is made for use on an alaskan mill, it just gets in the way otherwise.

Taco holder deluxe

The Max-Tach taco on the 880 milling saw is so handy I've never taken it off the 880 except to tune other saws. Anyway I got sick of taking it off and putting it back on the 880 so I bought another taco and made another stand for it. This one just clamps the taco by the shape of the holder and is lined with felt padding to protect the taco.

Basic taco clamp is fabbed up from 1" brass angle and handle bar clamp is adapted from a racing bicycle gear change cable clamp.

Cheers Brad, I got the initial idea for self clamping holder while I was making this tripod holder for my iphone.

This was the first one I made a couple of weeks back

And this is yesterdays effort

How do you like the Fast Tach for milling, Bob ? I find the fast update -- necessary for tuning -- is very annoying for milling. I like the slower $30 ENM better for milling.

I haven't used the Fast Tach for milling and don't really intend to, but that's also what I said about the first one I got.
