I know this has been discussed, but can anyone tell me the difference between stihl's EDT 7 and 8 tach.

I can not, I wish I could because before long someone is gonna come on here and tell ya to do a search and I hate when that happens.:hmm3grin2orange:

I have done some searching. I see that the EDT5 and lower may not work with the newer saws, but I haven't found anything differentiating between the 7 and 8. All of the saws that I currently have are older, but I will eventually end up with a newer saw and if i'm spending money to buy a tach, I want it to work with it as well. Sorry if it's been discussed, I just didn't find it.

Lakeside would know for sure.
I have the EDT-5 and love it. Wouldnt trade it for anything else out there.

Part of the confusio is the nonsense description in the current catalog...Just Ignore it...

"The EDT7 (deluxe model)works with 4-cycle engines that control the ignition from the camshaft. The EDT8 works with 4 cycle engines that control the ignition from the crankshaft".

Both of the EDT7 and 8 tachs will work with all previous Stihl ignitions, as well as the new IEM MS 280, and all future models that have dual magnets in the flywheel. All previous tachs includng the EDT5 will not work on IEM units.

The EDT7 has a mode button that will allow selecting different engine ignition systems, but this feature is not required on Stihl products. Might be useful on your generator or other engines though...

The EDT8 has no mode features, and will work with all STIHL products.

These tach do not refresh the display as fast as the EDT5 ... Takes a couple of seconds

Cut4fun,
Don't you also have a little $24 tach also?

Yep it has a refresh rate of 2.5 seconds
The EDT-5 has a refresh rate of .5 second

The 2.5 sec $24 tach was to long for my hotter saws, but is fine with the stock saws. I just learned to feather the throttle till I got up to the WOT rpms for my final reading for the cheapie tach, The EDT-5 I didnt have yo do that.

Cut4fun,
So, the edt 7 and 8 also have that kind of refresh rate, so they would also be difficult to use with modded saws? I don't have a tach yet, still trying to decide what to get. I saw some of the EDT7 and 8's on ebay and it got me thinking.

Bailey's Tach has a refresh rate of 1.5 seconds. So make sure you do your research, before buying.

The 7's or 8's work fine..

I got the EDT-7 love it :)
update rate is 0,5 sec, allot faster then the cheap 24$ tach that I first bought 2,5 sec on that one ,,,,
and those 2,5 sec seems verrrry long at wot !!!

So Lake would you say the EDT7 would be the best, or more specifically, most versatile for different applications? I am in the market for a good tach and if I could use for the multitude of other small engines sitting 'round my property all the better.

If your heart is not set on a Stihl tach, I have the Tech Tach TT-20K from Design Technology, Inc. Wireless and reads in an instant. I am very pleased with it.

Do you (or anybody else) know if there is a difference in refresh/update times between the Tech Tach TT-20K and the Fast-Tach (both from Design Technology)?

Yes... if you are looking for a Stihl, but I haven't personally tried it, so... The -20K is a good tach also.

I called before ordering my tach. I was told the TT-20K has a faster update than the Fast-Tach. The TT-20K uses a 9volt battery and has a rubber protective sleeve. Nice Tach.

Just what I wanted to know, thank ya! As it has been with me lately...I'll be ordering one as money allows.... I want it all NOW, not later...:). I'm learning patience and the facts of life.
