I am about to do some traveling with my gear for the first time...just wondering...you guys have your gear as a carry on or checked bag? I have the black diamond haul bag and am not sure if its gonna be too big, or if I check it in itll be too heavy? I know I have to check my hand saw, any other suggestions? All I need to bring is my harness, hard hat, rope, handsaw, and a separate bag for my clothing.

I'd check it all if I were you. I've flown with gear a few times, and I always check everything just because airports are so uptight nowadays. Anything unusual freaks them out. I've checked some unusual stuff over the years, including things like samurai swords, and nobody ever had a problem with me walking into an airport and checking that stuff. Walk through check in with a pair of nail scissors though, and someone will probably shoot you. The list of items that you can't carry on is pretty extensive, and also fairly loose in definition and includes blunt objects over a certain size, anything with a sharp edge (yes, even nail clippers), and anything that could conceivably be used as a weapon.... so an uptight officer could deny you the right to take a newspaper on board if you rolled it up. Avoid the stress and check the lot, unless you were planning on doing some climbing mid flight.

Definitely can't bring a set of climbing spurs in your carry on. Or if you usually hang a knife off your saddle that could be a major issue as well.
