friend of mine is selling an 070 its pretty clean infact its only done about 5 hours work or so he says he wants £200 thats about $400 , becouse its so old and has not been run for such a long time he recons it needs a new diaghram kit for it apart from that its fine it runs but is a bit lumpy down to the diaphragms,i have no idea of its worth what cc it is, parts availability, max bar size or evan when it was made and most importantly its is it worthy for that money in my collection it does kinda strike me as a monolithic giant of a saw and im thinkin the money would be better saved for a more modern saw but im tempted to go for it! so whats the verdict

sounds like i need a lookin at this beastie ill get some pics posted when i have a look.
For 200 though sounds worth while maybe just as an milling saw chris has not used it and he brought it cheap he quite regularly uses an ms88 but says this saw saws scares him when he revs it up especially as it has no chain brake!

They are still made, by Stihl in Germany, for sale in some 3rd World Countries (Mexico is one)- parts could take some time to get, but it should be possible.

Pretty good for a design from the late 1950s (Contra/Lightning).

Hey Matty

Where in Herts are you? im from near Royston originally, I have a 070 that i picked up at a farm sale a couple of weeks back for £35 (very tidy condition needs a new chain) also watched a one go on ebay recently for £52 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=280121020495&rd=1&rd=1

if you want it for a mint example for a collection then go for it, but at £200 i might be tempted to shop a round a bit, also do you just plan to mill with it or actually use it for felling and clearing? they are a beast though!:chainsawguy:

070 is pretty much identical to the 090 except for the top end and the clutch assembly. If things go as planned, we'll be able cover you with high quality, inexpensive (compared to Stihl's prices), aftermarket parts in a few months. We will have every part for that saw.

Is this the Chinese sandcast version? Last I looked at one (9 months ago) they were heavy and real rough. I had the chance to buy one for $400 and passed. Thought of parting it out but it wasn't clear if all the parts could actualy interchange with the stihl saws.

Not sure about your market, but in the USA for a low mileage 070 that would be a good price.

As I remember it, they claim 100% parts interchangability - but who really knows......:biggrinbounce2:

The guys (importers) trying to sell me the saws backed away when I pressed the issue. I can see machined engine parts working, but not so sure about many of the other parts. Not sure if it's the same manf., but the TS400 copy I looked at was a joke... and the few that got sold locally (uh... Demo units - not EPA approved) lasted a few weeks and were junked.

Maybe they've improved... maybe.

It's about time they retired all the old ???? they sell in 3rd world countries.

Howdy,
I've got some video of their manufacturing facilities but, it won't upload on the AS. I'll try again later.

Hey charlie i live near basingbourn in a village called abbington piggotts near littiington and steeple morden well i dont really live there more in the middle of nowhere in some old farmers cottages.

Any way i spoke to the person with the saw hes gonna bring it over on wed and ill make him an offer if he takes 100 il buy it otherwise its money against a big saw that i need and will probably be more reliable than somthing of that age ..........rang up local stihl dealer and they want £150 for a new carb so if its mint it could be a nice hobby milling saw for all the waste timber i get.
