Amazon has one @ $9.00 that connects to the plug wire, then the spark plug. Easily shows strength impulse. Works connected to the motor running or not - or plug out of the motor. Very simple.

I use one of these, seem to work fine, except for like you say you have it has to be in view, but big difference in cost, if it's not in view, I just use a mirror

Spark Testers have been around for 40 yrs. Plug it into the plug wire, ground clip to engine, and pull the recoil......pretty much Shop Class 9th Grade

Big wide gap on a plug works best. Cut off even with center electrode and weld on an alligator clip.

It doesn’t, that won’t be under compression and won’t tell you what the coil is actually producing.
