Hey folks, I ventured onto this site as I was researching how to maintain the 4 acres we bought last summer. I'm very handy with powertools and equipment, but a newbie with a chainsaw. I've had some great training and education from friends that have been using them for a long time, and have developed a great respect for this piece of equipment that makes my life much easier.

I've always been one for PPE, but thought some of it was overkill if I'm just cutting up branches. Well, last week I found this site and read about the dangers. I just got back from my local farm store and picked up a pair of Husquvarna protective chaps and a pro forester helmet. I think i spent close to what I spent on my Poulan Pro saw on the gear, but it was just smart of me to do this. The money spent is chump change when you compare it to the months of recovery(if you survive) and medical bills incurred.

Without this site, I probably never would have bought that safety equipment.
So thank you everyone, and may you all have many more years of safe wood cutting.

I can second that. New to the site and have only been using chain saws for a couple of years but have always used husky chaps. Had my ms290 on slow down grab a vine and throw the bar into my left thigh! Chaps saved my leg, not a nick! Jammed up saw and shut it off. Just ordered a new pair of labonvilles should be here in time for weekend firewood cutting.

Thanks guys, I am excited to be here. I know I'm just a landowner, and most of you are pros, but I've found that you get the best advice from the pros. I have a friend(who's an arborist) coming over Saturday to help me fell a couple 50' trees that have died this summer, and I look forward to learning even more from him. I told my brother in law about my PPE purchase yesterday and he was jealous, so I know what to get him for Christmas.

Thanks. I've already learned what a barber chair is(on youtube and the tutorials I found on here, boy did I have it wrong in my mind until I watched it) and I have learned a lot about how cut placement and depth are so critical. Everything went very smoothly this weekend, taking down a total of 7 trees all from 25-65 feet tall. I will most certainly call professionals whenever I don't feel 100% comfortable with what I am planning to do.
