Is grim. This was the best picking I've been in this year. It entailed a 32 mile drive (a good hour), a climbing trail for a mile, no water for hot labradors to soak in (I knew that and had lots of drinking water) and there were watchers. The picking would be mediocre on a normal year. I'd say we spent about 4 hours at it. I didn't quite make a gallon.
Pictures.
The huckleberry brush.
My pack dog. Who is worn out and sleeping on his plush bed. He deserves it.
Mt. Adams--I used a zoom for this one.
I stopped to pick a bit on our way out. I saw a white dot on the rock above.
We were being watched by the Billy Goats Gruff. I really zoomed to get this and could not get a sharp image.
This area was burned back in 1919 or thereabouts. It was not reforested and has been slow to come back. The elevation is around 5000 feet.
Summer temps today. We suffered, the flies came out, but not to worry. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow, maybe.
I sure hope next year is a better berry year.
