Eventful day with my 044. Its been tore apart for 2 weeks now awaiting crank seals. With no other saws to be gone threw i decided to go ahead and get it back together.
The good.
I made a crankcase splitter at work couple weeks back, and have not had the chance to use the fugly thing yet until today. It was not intended to split the 044, But my dumb as$ changed that real quick with my lack of attention. Worked great by the way. Very happy I've split my first case without any issues. I just took a piece of 90 angle, cut some slots in with the end mill at work. Welded a end plate and some nuts and all thread. simple as can be, and ugly as sin. BUT it works :D

The bad.
After the saw is nearly complete, i was installing the clutch, and hear a bad sound.......Metal scraping as the piston was moving towards my piston stop. i instantly stopped to try and locate the culprit. I initially thought it was the flywheel rubbing the case on jug, so i pulled the fly wheel off....nope. Then i thought maybe i busted a ring while installing the jug back.....removed the jug...nope, everything seems to be intact and in correct placement. so wtf?!

The WTF?!
While the jug was off i noticed an ugly sight just beside the crankshaft on the case on the clutch side. What the hell is that i though. I tried rotating the crank and it was almost lodged, with a little more force i revealed the culprit. At first sight i thought it was the solder from checking my squish. I was wrong. When removing the oil pump weeks ago i did not pay attention to the bolt lengths when removing. I just assumed they was all the same length as the clutch cover. WRONG. My ******* used the wrong bolts to bolt the oil pump on which is longer. This caused the case to bulge out into the side of the crank. I was disgusted with myself thinking i just ruined my saw.

so after a few choice words and a little mental abuse to myself, i split the case. Took a fine stone on my dremel and smoothed the bulging areas. I think it will be fine, and should cause no harm. Learn something new everyday, even if its a F*CK up to do the learning.

I was about to say the same thing. Looks like the cage is broked and 2 balls are sitting next to each other. I'm trying to look at it telling myself it's just the wd40 messing with my vision but i still don't see it. One of those things you gotta view in person.

Yup, had a bunch of mess ups to teach me. Drill Sergeants always used to say that the best teachers are pain and embarrassment.
Any way. I think your fix should work just fine. As long as there are no cracks, I'd run it. If it does cause an issue, you can use a skim coating of JB weld... Re assemble and run it... Good job so far.
