The Pope´s Christmas tree cut down in Austria with a Husqvarna chainsaw
As an honor for the 500 year jubilee of the church of Eferding (upper Austria) prince Georg Starhemberg was invited to donate the big Christmas tree for the Peters square in the Vatican (Rom).

The 30 m high and 60 years old spruce was cut by forest master Franz Fenzl with a Husqvarna chainsaw beginning of December. It couldn’t just be cut down it was lifted with a big crane so the magnificent branches had to be conserved.

The tree was then loaded with a huge crane onto a truck an was transported together with 30 smaller (3 m) spruces for the apartments of the cardinals to its destination in Rome.

The official setting up of the big tree will be on the 17 of December 2005 in Rome/Italy where an Austrian delegation with the head of the provincial government Josef Pühringer and diocesan bishop Ludwig Schwarz will hand over the tree officially to pope Benedict 16th.

That is some tree.

I have to say, kind of a shame they got to kill it for this, I guess they could not pot it, the pot would have to be rather LARGE :D

I wonder what happens to the wood afterwards...?

Cheers!

....oh yeah....

Merry Christmas!!

Well that is kind of too bad, there must be some useable wood in a 60 year old tree, so they could make stuff out of it. Just think how neat it would be to have a wooden cross made out of the Pope's Christmas tree :D

Cheers!

I just hope they used winterized bar oil...and to all the leaf kissers and tree huggers; it's a christmas tree for christ sake. get over it.

If that comment is directed at me, you mis-understand my post.

Trust me, I'm the last person on earth that would be called a tree hugger!

Trees are like hair, it grows back!

I guess it was somewhat ment towards you, guess I took it wrong. I suppose they could have moved the vatican to the tree. No offense intended except to all those tree huggers and leaf kissers who by the way can foook off.

OK, just as long as we are clear on that, calling me a tree hugger, them's fighting words!! ;) :D

I grew up in the bush, spent most of my youth there, dirtbiking, hunting, fishing etc, also cutting a LOT of fire wood.

I'm from Kelowna BC, well I was born and raised there.

I also have a bit of a thing about the pomp and ceremony of the Catholic Church, I hate seeing things go to waste, so if they cut down that tree for Christmas, fine, but use the wood afterwards!

Like boneheads who go deer hunting and only take a trophy!

Anyways, neat PR opportunity for Husky for sure!
