looks like a pretty basic removal especially since they are using a crane. Port-a-wrap as a descender is a new one on me though.

Cranes are nice. Looked like a good crew, but I don't know if I would call this amazing either. The tree wasn't really close to any structures like being just a couple feet from a home, or near powerlines. It wasn't dead, unstable, or unable to be climbed. Nice video though, thanks.

Amazing good, or just amazing? Maybe I'm just not seeing it correctly.

1. If they have a climber in the tree, why are they lifting another man to tie a rope at the end of the branch?

2. Is there anything that prevents lowering the limbs, without the use of the Crane? I didn't notice any prominent obstructions.

3. If they are using the little miniature Bobcat to manage the branches, why is there a monster pile of branches? What are they doing, saving it all for a grapple truck?

4. The use of a port-a-wrap as a descender indicates that they perhaps are not familiar with industry-standard techniques. Going up and down on the ball of the crane to tie the lowering line confirms this problem.

They look like perfectly capable good-old-boys that have figured out how to do tree work on their own.

what the hell was that?

porta wrap on the saddle? another climber making the cuts? tag line on or above the ball and not on the wood (what the hell does that do for trying to position the cut in the landing zone)?!

whole lotta swinging after them cuts. more balance for the sling placement will remedy that.

tough to watch.

thanks for posting.

Why use something as heavy and potenially rib breaking as a portawrap? Theres dozens of cheaper decenders that would work better and safer.
Gave the crane alot more shakes than it needed.
Second to last cut done from the bucket of skid steer? He looks like he nearly lost it. Lazy shortcutting.
To many guys floating around without hard hats on when the crane is still moving loads.
Guy in the tree just has a normal hardhat one, they are great until you have a accident and are the first thing to hit the ground.
Why does the guy keeping coming down? Doesnt trust the lever monkey?

Easy dismantle, wonderful access, plenty of room. Just used the crane because it was only 85 an hour to rent so who wouldnt at that kind of price?

Im feeling fussy, overall a good job, they have all the other toys, why no decender?

OK, you're new here, welcome. Maybe that explains your "amazing" description, as in an assumed positive stroke. This crew is doing plenty of things that are amazing, sure, but that is not to be taken in a good way. Using a porta wrap for a descender is dangerous and silly, as there are so many great descenders out there designed for the job. The release of large branches with a crane securing them should not result in the wild swinging seen in your video. At least, an added butt tie on those branches until they are free could keep the swing and resulting shock loading of the crane from ever occuring. Don't feel bad. You are, perhaps, new to the biz. I can remember watching guys whom I thought were great in trees many, many years ago. Now, given what I've learned over the years, I wouldn't even hire those guys because of the techniques they used while aloft. You live and learn, hopefully.

I mostly agree with the critics...still I wonder how much of that looked worse than it was because of the fast motion.

Not to mention you can pick apart any video. I've seen these guy's videos before and they're good, but nothing special.

Is a cable log choker a legitimate way to attach limbs to a crane?

these guys had a video where their port-a-wrap was set up wrong and intentionally showed it in the video.

Why is shockloading bad? Oh yeah, damage to the crane, tip the crane, have the cable choker come off, swing into the climber.

I like the classical music for the video. They might think that it makes them look professional not to have death metal for a removal. Hides the fact that they are making lots of mistakes, not.

We do crane trees everyday i had a couple bad experiences with cable chokers years ago .we use slings with clevis or straps . Its all about placement of the straps any shot we take has very minimal swing and no flipping upside down or anything like that . as for the porta rap deal a figure 8 is like 25 dollars lol

That video is cool because cranes are cool and they're removing big chunks at a time but like everyone said, there's lots they could improve on. The swing on some of that stuff was downright scary. That's the heaviest figure eight I've ever seen :). Guess it doesn't matter when the crane gets it up there but I wouldn't want it hangin on me when I'm foot lockin. That pile of mess on the ground was kinda shocking too considering the army of guys they had there.

I wish I did more crane work - sigh.
