I was deadwooding a large hackberry and had just started brushing out a large nest that I was sure had been abandoned long ago. Something told me to use my hand instead of my 192. Just as I brushed off the top third of the nest this tennis ball sized head poked up and looked at me. It looked just like any other new baby bird head you've ever seen, but about twenty times bigger! I instantly understood why a red-tail hawk was seen hovering above the tree during the whole time I was working on it. I carefully covered the nest back up as best I could and finished the job, being careful to not disturb the nest area. When I got down, Mom perched on an elm about fifty feet away and waited for me to pack up. As I drove off she flew back to the hackberry. I'm pretty sure everything turned out OK as the HO told me the nest was rebuilt over the next few days. We do get to see some cool stuff when we're aloft. That keeps me interested.
