I'm hoping somebody here will know where I can get a new throttle shaft for my Tillotson carb. I've always suspected that I had an air leak on my 075 Stihl and I found a wore out shaft. I don't think my local Stihl guy is going to have much luck getting it, and an internet search isn't revealing much.

If I can't find it, I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new carb. The rest of the saw is perfect so I know she's worth it. Anybody know of a good source for a new carb, other than the $100 Stihl variety?

Thanks, Chris B.

Sawfan the auction carbs are for the 042/048 Stihls. They are both Walbros but I am afraid the throttle shafts are different. It takes a lot of running to wear out a shaft, or a guy that constantly bips the trottle while he runs the saw. Guys like that drive me nuts! I know some of you AS guys do it so tell me why? Mike

Ruppedoggy!

Don't be mad at me?! I bought the 075 at an auction for $20, so I count myself super lucky that I don't have leaky seals or bad crankcase gaskets. I had to put a new piston in and some various odds-and-ends but that's it. And I'm glad I finally found my airleak.

Sawfan,

I saw those ebay, but I could tell they weren't the right ones. Maybe with a new throttle shaft they would work, but that brings me back to my original problem.

Incidentally, my nearest Stihl dealer wasn't too confident about finding the part, but the next closest said it was a good number so I should have it Wed.

I may yet need a new carb, but I hope that the shaft will fix the problem.

Thanks, Chris B.

I wish it were only $80 worth of parts. Piston, gaskets, and assorted fasteners alone cost me about $100. But that's all it took to get her running. Did I mention the coil wire broke off flush with the body of the coil...but I found a good used one. I had to get a bar for the saw but I don't count that as I could switch it to other saws. And I got two 30" loops of brand-new .404 chain for free.

It's worth it when I have a saw that'll dwarf just about any other around and a real good runner to boot.

One last thing...

The 075 ran pretty good, but I always felt that the carb was set too lean. Then there was the time the decompression vavle popped out and I think the saw was headed towards a lean seizure but I caught it in time. (Exhaust sounded tinny.)

Happily, the compression is top notch and she will certainly pass a hang test...with my other 3 stihls hanging off it as well.

Sorry for the yammering, just love writing about this stuff.

Just in case anybody is interested, I got all my parts for the 075 and put her back together. New throttle shaft, fuel and impulse hoses, and carb gasket. Shaft has much, much less play than before, I would guess a couple thousandths. I started her up with 5 pulls, but will have to wait till tomorrow to get her adjusted properly and into some nice red oak. Also, I'm running K2 Maxima at 32:1. Good stuff, but pricey.

Final update,

Finished setting up the 075. I have to be careful or she'll yank me off my feet. Setting this carb is interesting. Can't set it just slightly rich like my 045s. Have to keep opening it up and trying her in the wood.

Now I just have to wait for my friend to start bucking the big logs in his field so the 075 will have something worthwhile to do.

Later, Chris B.
