Hello ladies and gentlemen,

(Don't worry, I use those terms liberally and loosely)

I have been having logs sawn by an old crotchety man up the road and I am generally pleased and the labor savings is worth the money. However he will not quartersaw on his band mill and I have run into the occasional tree that is to big.

This past weekend I bought a nice cheery 660 (and a 362 stihl) both barely used and right at a grand. The 660 wears a 25" 3/8 x .050 bar

I have a large 36" white oak on the ground right now with what appears to be a flawless 8' trunk. I am going to order a timber jig but wonder about thee bar and chain I need. Since I am quartering this one and its 36" /2 =18" should I use a 20" bar or does the timber jig lose some cut length? Since the bar nose will be hurried in the tree for at least two of the quartering cuts should I get a roller bar or a hard nose one. Any bar brands other than stihl recommend?

What about chain? I have read enough now to be confused with all the options. One that interest me is the stihl pmx made for logosol. Seems available through baileys but have to call to purchase. I have use picco chain on a neighbors 180 and it seemed ok but will it work on the 3/8 x .050 bars and sprockets? Stated dimensions appear to say yes but I did not know if there was a difference in something else that made it not useable. Also other than the top angle of the pmx ripping chain is there another difference from the regular picco chain that I could order from my stihl dealer and change the angles myself? Is it a chipper or Chisel tooth?
Any other mods to the saw I need to consider other than a dual port muffler cover and removing the limiters?

Thanks

I too have a Timberjig and use the 63PMX chain. I have a 32" bar currently and am using it with my Alaskan on my Husky 372XPW. With the Timberjig I am using my McCulloch PM700 and 3/8" chisel chain for the time being, on a 18" hard nose bar(what I happen to have at the time). I am going to retool with a sprocket tip bar and picco as well, probably go with 22-24". Logosol reccomended no longer than a 24" bar I believe. If budget allows, and you can get the bigmill rail setup to use with the Timberjig, you wil not regret it. Cuts will be much more precise. Good Luck with it. You will like milling the Logosol way!

BTW, baileys suggested I use a new 3/8" sprocket (rim) and tip on my bar with the picco chain. The fit is not exact, but they wear in together and I have had no issues. The .365" rim and the Logosol bar are in short supply, so they may or may not have them in stock when you go to order.

My timberjigg sets up well with my 394xp and 28" bar using 3/8 .050 Woodland Pro ripping chain (purchased through baileys). I actually used it to slab 24" red oak rather than quarter/make dimensional lumber. It worked out better than expected. The 28" Total Super bar barely reached (came up 1/8" short on one section of the slab) but it was just bark which created no issues. I mention this because you will lose 2-4" of bar with the timberjigg, which is expected.
