I read somewhere that pulling the key out of the flywheel and turning it counterclockwise to advance timing. So what keeps the flywheel from turning? Also could the same thing be acheived by lowering the coil? The saw is a 66.

The key is just a locating device - it has nothing to do with stoping the flywheel from tuning on the crank.

When the flywheel is correctly torqued down on the tapered shaft, it "stretches" a tiny amount making a very tight friction fit on the crank stub. Not only do you not need the key, but you don't need the nut either (but leave it on, just in case ;).

O.K thanks I didn't want to to that and end up down in the bottom of a strip and have the flywheel come loose. Also whats the deal with the old 66 flywheel with 2 keyways and the new 660's only have one?

The older flywheel was set up for different coils., you had to match the slot for the correct ignition, or it would try to rip your arm off. Newer flywheels just use the later ignitions.

Do an AS search on "066 ignition". There is a file showing all the 066/064 coil and flywheel combinations.
