We ran across this interesting fruiting body on the trunk of an old (really, really old) apple tree today. The conk is approximately 4 1/2 ft up from the base.

Any ideas?

That's exactly what I thought, but I'm waiting for David to take the first bite...

The Lady and the Tramp thing, eh? How romantic.....Nope, going to wait for him to take the first bite.
