This tree was about 20 feet from where a building burned down. The area that is infected is towards the fire side. Is it on it's way out and should it be removed or just leave it alone. The fire happened 3 years ago.

Neither of the above; you need more info to know. Scrape off the dead bark and wood, measure the cavity, and take another picture.

a little tough from the pic.....is that all white fungus going up the tunk? if so drop that thing, the wood will be punky garbage.

kf, some white fungus only grows on the bark, some white fungus only grows in the sapwood, and very few species of fungus that have white fruiting bodies decay the heartwood. Especially in a mere 3 years.

Chris Duley wrote a great book on decay fungi, you might want to get a copy, so you can find out what you're dealing with. ;)

you seem to be a wealth of info as far as tree's are concerned and i fully respect your opinion.

but here in the north east when i see wood like that i know my spikes will be sinking into punky wood.

since i still need to return a saw to marky i'm sure i'll get to see the tree before he makes a decision about removing it. i would not just throw removal advice around with out knowing the fact's. but since its marky looking for wood to cut into cookies i figured what the hell.

How big of a window do I need to cut and how deep. This fungus started last year. I take a few more shot of it.

Ken that tree is nothing I have a 22" pine that needs some testing. I think Gypo might come down for some Easter Big woog.
