if one is simply taking a good piston and cylinder off a broken ms460 and putting it on another ms460 powerhead that needs a p&c is there any need to hone the cylinder??

also, are parts interchangeable on 440 and 460 except crank, piston, cylinder?
can piston & cylinder be switched together between 440 and 460?

As long as the piston and rings and cylinder stay together as a set then you do not have to hone the cylinder since the rings are already broken in and seated to the cylinder. If you were going to put new rings on the oil P&C, then you would want to hone the cylinder and create a new finish for the new rings.

I would also try and keep the rings in the same position as you took them out in. It also wouldn't hurt to clean out the ring groves/lands depending on how long the P&C was in use.

Sorry, I can't help much on the parts interchange as I'm not exactly a saw expert. You'll have to try and get some Stihl experts to chime in on the second part of your question.

A set of rings are pretty cheap. Seems like a new set of rings and a couple minutes with a flex ball hone would pay big dividends if you can swing it. KD
